ERHAPS it is the time of the year that brings in so many letters from young women who live alone, and hate it (usually marked "Confidential," so no names). These writers sort themselves out into three types, and each explains the reason and answer to her own unhappiness in the way she writes of herself.

If only she would read her own letter objectively, as if it was from some other woman, she would see the answer pretty clearly. And that is what I hope she will do.
