NEW ZEALANDER WOUNDED BY JAPANESE
MACHINE-GUNNED Chinese Advance On Hangchow-Wuhu Front
IN PARACHUTE DESCENT
Dramatic Sequel To Nanchang Raid: Frenchman
Killed
Hankow, Jan. 21.
Foreign volunteers, who are working for the Chinese Air Force on individual contracts on a basis of experience and ability, receive a bonus when they shoot down planes, and are given compensation for injuries. Com- pensation is given to their relatives if they are killed.
The known casualties to date include two Americans, Sangster and Welch, who were killed accidentally, an American named Kreuzberg and a Frenchman who were killed in a combat, and an Austrian and a New Zealander, who were wounded in combat.
The New Zealander is a pilot nuned Whitehead, who has a wife and child in New Zealand. He was shot down at Nanchang in December. He and a Frenchman were flying cross- country when they unwittingly met Japanese planes at the time they were raiding Nanchang, The Frenchman was shot down and killed, and White- head's plane caught fire.
Whitehend took to his parachute, while the planes circled above him and directed very heavy machine- gun fire at him ne he was trying to pull the shrouds of the parachute for-the-purpose-of-a-faster.descent He was handicapped by
wounded shoulder, while bullets ripped dozens of holes in the parachule. The planes were flying too close to him, and therefore the bullets were going high.
FEIGNED DEATH
Whitehead finally feigned death. He grew limp, with his head slumped on his chest, after which the Japanese planes departed.
The New Zealander was rescued and brought to the Hankow hospital, but as the upper part of his body was In a east, and he was unable to move during air raids, he was transported to the basement.
Whitehead was sent to Hongkong by plane on January 12.
