Doubts Stories Of Peace Talks.
To The Editor,
Hongkong Telegraph.
Sir,-Despite the statement of Madame Chiang Kai-shek that she had come to Hongkong for reasons of personal health, and for no other reason, rumours still persist that her visit is in connection with the report- ed peace parleys with Japan. So far as I have been able to uscertain, there is nothing farther from the truth. Mme. Chiang, whose word should be accepted, has explained why she has come. Why is. she not believed? Why will some people insist on being so sceptical?
Personally I have my doubts that any peace talks have been going on. General Chlang, with whom I have. the honour to be, slightly acquaint- ed, is without doubt a real patriot, a patriot of the first water and cer- tainly he is not a traitor. He is not the kind of man to sell his beloved China,, and rumours to the effect that he has opened negotiations for peace are not only unfounded but down- right lies spread with a malicious intent by enemies to discredit the Generallisimo.
China has never sought war, but since war has been forced on her, the Chinese people may rest assured that Genci Chiong will demand peace with honour. When Japan stops her senseless and brutal aggression, the Chinese Government, I think, will be ready to discuss peace, but not be- fore.
The Chinese people have shown that they are not afraid of the Japon- ese.. We are less afraid of a declara- tion of war, which is only Japanese baloney. Let them come. They can do little worse than what they have done during the past few months. W. H. CHEN
