MISSING MUCILAGE MYSTERY

How Post Office

"Unstuck"

Hongkong Stamps Investigations following complaints from renders of lack of muelinge on stamps have Hongkong 20-cent brought forth a remarkable explana- tion.

When supplies of King George V stamps became exhausted last year, the Hongkong

Ruthorities postal ordered fresh supplies of 1-cent, 4-cent and 20-cent stumps from Lon- don.

Apparently the stamp printers in London were experimenting with a new type of gumming machine when the Hongkong order arrived. The order was printed and the new stamps were despatched to Hongkong When the parcel arrived at the GP.O.. however, the sheets of stamps had congealed into a perfect block of paper.

There was

only one way to separate the sheets. The congealed ness was thrown into a dish of hot water and the laborious task of care- fully separating each sheet was done by coolies. It look time, but Hong- breathed kong postal authorļiivs freely again when the philatelle idea of ungumining stamps with water proved successful,

Warm

Many of the stamps were torn and had to be discarded, but u sufcient supply of 1-cent, 4-cent und 20-cent stumps, all without mucilage, bas been salvaged to prevent a shortage before new supplies arrive at the end of this month.
