BRITISH IMPORTS INCREASE

London, Jan, 12. - The overseas trade Ngures for 1937 showed tatal Imports at £1,029,005,- 000, compared with £847,752,000 in 1938.

Total exports, including re-exports, were £600,781,000 compared will 2501,374 the previous year.

The excess of imports over exports for the year was £432,304,000.com- pared with £340,378,000 in 1030- Reuter's Special.

Despite the refusal of big employ STOP PRESS

ers to attend, the Government de- cited to proceed with plans for a conference on the understanding that the employers would be available for consultation.

Nervousness concerning the out- come of the conference was reflected

on the Bourse, where Rentes and JAPANESE

variable interest stocks dropped.

Even before it was known that the employers were not attending, it was rumoured that the employers would refuse to sign any new agreement. Since no "Mutually Debates" charter between the employers and the Trade Union Federation can result, the onus will be plneed on AT. Exciting Finish To Cricket Match

ona

Oxford bent Cambridge by run in the annual cricket match of the Hongkong, Oxford and Cam- bridge Society on the Cricket Club ground yesterday, when one of the most exciting finishes of the season was witnessed by II.E. the Governor, Sir Geoffry Northcote, Lady North- cote and E. Mator-General A. W. Bartholomew.

Oxford batted first and knocked up 119, to which L. T. Rida con- tributed 42 ֈnd*H. W. Baines. 25. The first wicket partnership between these two put on 08 runs.

Cambridge seemed in a good post- tion when, thanks to D. McLellan's fine knock of 30 and good batting by W. Wooding and J. Hall. they found themselves with, less than 20 needed and three wickets to fall.

When Hall left, however, E. W. Hamilton came out to join R. A. Barron and Cambridge still needed 12 runs with two wickets to fall.

Fielding was very keen, and N. L. Smith distinguished himself by stopping a hard drive to square leg and retrieving another ball which would have given important points. Harold Lee also snapped up a couple af drives from Barron and smartly netded them.

Gris was then put on torbowl, when. Cambridge needed six to win. Barron drove his fourth ball hard back to Griffiths, who held it though it, was not easy to take.

R. E. Lindsell joined Hamilton at the erease and the two veterans were left to knock off the six.

Hamilton's Knock

Hamilton faced B. C. K. Hawkins who was, rather rashly, bowling to the leg where there was plenty of space. The fourth ball Hamilton snicked to square leg for a four, amidst great acclamation, leaving Cambridge with two runs to get for a win and one run for a draw,

Hamilton made a fine drive of the last ball of the aver, hitting. it squarely and driving it hard in the direction of mid-on, where Whyatt quickly placed himself and brought off an excellent catch, saving the game for Oxford,

The Governor and G.O.C. were guests to luncheon at the Cricket Club-prior to the match, which be- gan at 2 p.m:
