London,

The "third back" or "stopper" play of centre-halves at soccer, popularis- ed by Arsenal and adopted widely in recent years evokes constant critic ism, and most followers of the game would like to see a different style of play.

Of course, the present tactics are the outcome of the off-side rule, and critics of present-day centre-half play are mostly agreed that reform should come through a change of this law, which has now been in exis- tence twelve years. Many of those who supported the change ure sur prised to see the unexpected out- come of it.

Mr. C. E. Sutcliffe, the president of the Football League, has made à few remarks on the subjects. "I re- member telling Herbert Chapman," he said, "that he was building monument which would rise higher than the stands at Highbury and that it would be known as 'Arsenal's Foliy

"STOPPER" MADE COMPLETE

"One of Mr. Chupinan's strongest characteristles was his readiness to borrow an idea and develop it with nt remarkable thoroughness, and least it may be said that he made the "stopper" more complete than had previously bear conceived to be necessary.
