"HERE WE ARE AGAIN!"?
At the Pantomime
THE
THERE IS NOTHING like a Christ-
mas pantomime.. Except,
another Christmas
course,
of
pan-
tomline. They all-very naturally bave certain poluts in common.
Cinderella, in the klichen, sings a song about Love and the Colorado moon.
Dick Whittington, on Highgate H11, sings a song about Love
stars over Miami.
and the
Red Riding Hood, in the wood, sings a song about Love and the ranch in Wyomingt
Evenings Crusoe, on tls de-
sert island,
a son about Love
and the lone prairie,
These yearnings have superseded the old convention, which set Love in a garden of roses, down a shady or beside a moonilt fountain, lanc,
peasants, Even yo olde Englysshe dancing come-skippity-come-hoppity round the maypole outside the Cat and Fiddle, are apt to break into a rousing chorus all about their old black mommies 'way down in old Dakota. (Enter the Baron, pursued
by creditors.)
Some of us are perfectly happy in this atmosphere: others are less so. Some enjoy the first four-and-n-balf hours and then tilnic of home: others, again, are unable to under- sland why it's also terribly Boon over.
Pantomime-parties, fortunately for the student of human nature, are usually composed of people of all ages and it is the privilege of the wife-and-inother of such a party to note the reactions of all concerned.
Her Best and most garnest alien- tion is given to the youngest.

This dialogue, with only a few minor variations, runs, like a recur- rent motif, through the afternoon. A mother (well-trained by the trivial round, the common task, in the art of attending to a number of things at once), whitst bearing her part in the clown-therne with spirit, is also able to lend an car elsewhere.
