AMAZING FIGHT WITH DEATH

SUCCEEDS

London, Nov. 20.

Receiving three pints of her own blood by transfusion after her heart had stopped beating, a woman aged 34, the wife of a Civil Servant, has been saved by a remarkable operation performed at Croydon General Hospital.

Dr. C. J. C. Siggers, 31-year-old resident surgical! officer, and his assistant, Dr. Eric Ashman, were the men in this life-and-death drama of the operating theatre.

Rubber Suit For 'Iron Lung Man'

New York, Dec. 1.

Frederick B. Snite, millionaire's son, who has lived in an "iron lung" for two years, hopes in a few days to be transferred to a light-weight sponge-rubber "lung." In this he will be able to move his arms, legs, and neck, which he has not done since he was stricken with infantile paralysis while in China on a world tour. He travelled in the "iron lung" half-way across the world to his home in Florida, has maintained a cheerful interest in everything around him, and has been visited regularly by the girl whom he hopes to marry.

Lately, however, his medical attendants noticed that he was becoming depressed because of his inability to move. They hope to see an improvement when he moves into his new "lung."

NEARLY BETTER

It was not until then that Dr. Siggers could proceed with the opern- tion proper.

Transfusion with the patient's own blood is only rarely possible, writes the Medical Correspondent. Hemorr hage must be a large one into the abdominal cavity. There must be no germs present such as those from The sulterer must be in the hands of surgeon with full equipment for

to an organ like the liver or spleen, generally following accidents.
