CHINESE BURNING TSINGTAO

Japanese Arcas Gutted

Shanghai Dec. 19.

The Chinese authorities have start- ed to blow up Japanese mills and foc-. tories, with other plants, at Tringtoo valued at $300,000,000, necording to foreign advices received here to-day. The Chinese are niso atuted to have closed the inner harbour,... presum- ably by sinking ships dcross 100 mouth.

H.M.S. Suffolk and the United States gunboat Sacramento are at present at Toingtao, but the naval force there will be supplemented by the American cruiser Marblehead and the destroyer Pope, which left Shung- hai this morning.

Japanese property at Tsingtao wan left under Rent with the Chinese authorities, when 20,000 Japanese residents there—the largest Japanese community anywhere in China after Shanghal-evacuated in July.

Apprehension lest the Chinese might destroy Japanese property has į rendered Tsingino virtually immune from attack.

Tsingtao has a fairly large foreign community, including 300 Americans and, 500 Britons.

Japanese reports say that the pro- perty has been destroyed on direct orders from the Central Government.

The first intimation of the grave developments ahead was when the curfew was clamped down at Tslug-

Harbour Inlets Closed

Tsingtao, Dec, 19. Determined to defend Tsingtao, the local authorities have blocked the harbour and all inlets and have dispositioned heavy troops at strate- gic points along the coast.

An orderly evacuation of the Chin- ere residents has begun. Special troops and gendarmes are posted t the railway station and road inter- sections to maintain order.:

Appropriate measures for protect- ing foreign lives and property are under the careful deliberation, of the local authorities.--Central News.

Japaners' Occupy Island

Tsingtao, Dec. 19.. Japanese occupation of Changshan Island, of the northern coast of the Shantung peninsula as a naval base is confirmed in reports received here. Large-scale Japanese landing on the coast of the peninsula is feared as more Japanese warships have ar- rived, the reports further state. Central News.
