THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH.
DECEMBER TUESDAY,
7, 1937.
CAN I LEARN
W
HY? How? When?, Where? Motorist and would-be motor- ist renders ask us thousands of questions in the course of a year.
Every day we are asked to advise on the purchase of a car, settle arguments as to the merits of different makes, probe licence dimculties, advise on the repair and maintenance of cars and motor-cycles—every imaginable question.
Most of the questions wo are asked are sensible-the motorist to-day is a highly intelligent being, and pseudo-technical stuff docan't put him off.
Regularly, I am asked if my name is really Wisdom; regularly. once a week, I get an abusive Jetter from one to whom motor-
are evidently ing and murder synonymous terms.
But bane of our life are the in- ventors who think that it only needs the word from us to get Lord Austin or Lord Numeld to
hance their schemes. Our desk
cluttered up - with dyels and contraptions that are in- tended to improve the motor-car. Few of them are successful. The way of the laventor is hard.

Can I learn to drive without actually driving a car? 'I mean, can I teach myself from a book?
If I answered "No" I should not be Years ago, Paris strictly acclitate.
faught Editor of the "Daily Jernid himself to drive from a book... Trazonably successful when he first took the wheel.
You can learn a great deal about innards" of the driving and the minter-car from books, but personat lution in a car is absolutely necessary In these tiny.

What is your advice about oil? Some uf my friesls say that cheap un- branded vils are perfectly all right.
Doubtless, there are sonic satisfue tury cut-prien" olls. Personally. I prefer not to risk damage to an expen- sive machine for the sake of saving n few pence.
Manufacturers advise the use of a high-grade oil of the correct type. Pre- Fumably they know what they are talking about.

Tell me, please, the best way to test the brakes of my car. This informa tion, now that the police are entitled to try brakes, trould be useful to many of 113.
Rough and ready way of testing brakes is to apply them from a speed ot 30 m.ph. and measure the distance It Lakes you to stop.
Look behind you before you try this test and use a telegraph pole or immp- post as a marker. If you can pull up in. 45 feet from this speed, your brakes Are in an average state of eliciency, Thirty feet from 30 m.p.h is very, very good-100 per cent. theoretien emci- ency.
Better method is to carry in the ear one of the new brake testerà just lasued to members of the Royal Automobile

These Fougasso sketches are from a little book presented by the Safety First Association to every holder of a provisional
driving licence,
Club. It is a small tin box (about the size of a 402, tobacco tia) and it is stood on its end on the car floor.
Apply the brakes at 25 m.p.h. If the tin falls over, the brakes nte O.K. If it does not, then adjustment is neces sary. Frequent use of the tester is advised by the R.A.C. A graduni de- crease in braking efflelency is not natleed by someone regularly driving the same car.
A best lite brake tester, for clamp- ing to the dashboard, is minde by the Ferodo people. They have also in augurated a service by which, at cer tala garages, brakes can be tested by o special ninchine, and a certificate of their emelency granted. Possession of a recent certificate would be usefu} 10 the pollee happen to stop you.
Can you tell me petrol consumption figures of the Ford "8" Flat 500," Morris "ky Hillman “Minz" ?
On road tests carried out by me, a Ford "" averaged 383 m.p.g.,. ⠀ Fint 54 in.p
Morris "g" 42 m.p.g., a Hillman "Minx" 33 m.p.g. I know, from letters, that many owners regularly obtain better Agures, some not su good.
You said, that nowadays the wo- man motorist knows the diference between a bumper-bar and a big _end_Well, chất_is_a_bip-end?
It is the "big-end" of the connect- ing-red (opposite end to the piston). and fils on to the crankshaft. It is lined with white metal. When the
lubrication system falls or the oil is unnaturally thin, then the "* big- end" becomes hot, the white metal melts, and there is a clanking Bound from the engine, THRE means you have "run'a big-end.”
What is the speedometer late-does Il apply, to all cars-new and old?
Since October 1 last afl new vehicles (those registered for the first tine! except those restricted to a speell of 12 m.p.h., und motor-cycles of is capu- elty less than 100 e.c., are required to carry an instrument (not necessarily a speedometer) that will indicate to the driver, withlu a margin of 10 per .cent, either way, when he is driving at a speed greater than that to which the vehicle is restricted by law,

Is it necessary for me to pass the dricing test-1 took out a licence in 1924 but never actually drove? tend to take a course of lessons but do not know whether I shall have to pass the test.
No-the driving test applies only to those who have not held a driving Heence prior to April 1, 2034.

I hold a provisional loence and carry the "L" sign on my motor-cycle combination. Can I carry a passenger in the side-car?
Yen-If the passenger is a licensed driver of at least two years' experience. Otherwise you will be committing an offence.
What questions pull the examiner ask—I am shortly gólny for my driving test?
All questions will be based on the Highway Code-1f you have studied the Code carefully you will be able to answer all the questions. Think care- folly before answering -*** some CX- aminers are fond of "trick" questiona like, "When is it permissible to pass a red-light at autonintic traffic signals?
What la double-declutching?
A method of changing gear silently end anoolly insisted on by drivers the veteran class. Nowadays, with the almost universal use of the synchiro- mesh gearbox, few drivers still do it.
Actually, double-declutchlog is alm- ply synchronising the speed of the engine and road wheels so that the gears mysh snoothly-exactly what the synchromesh mechanism of the modern gearbox docs.

I want to become a racing driver- How do I start?
It is a very expensive matter. British motor manufacturers, with the excep ton of free or four firma, do not sup port motor-racing. The result is that there are far more drivers than cars, -and-more-first-class-racing mechanics:
than are needed.
Frankly, I don't think there is much future in motor-racing. Few racing drivers have made motor-racing pay.
