MILESTONE IN HISTORY OF AIRWAYS

Enormous Progress In 18 Years

moves

The history of air travel swiftly, as doca actual trame along the flying routes. Milestones of pro- gress follow each other rapidly. To- day's wonder, in tnet, becomes com- monplace to-morrow.

Just now the flying world sees the land- attainment of several fresh

of

marks. One of them is the com- mili pletion of eighteen years transport on evinmerelsi fying routes as between London and the Continent. Another is the fact that the mileage of the world's air-lines has just at- tained, and allglitiy exceeded, a figure of 300,000,

in

There are those who are recalling how they stood out on the Hounslow nerodrome, on a misty morning November, 1913, watching the de- parture for Paris of anaeroplane I carrying the first mail-bag entrusted officially by the Post Office to the continental air routes. And progress rince those days is illustrated by the fact that, whereas It cost half-a- crown in 1910 to send u letter for 250 milles between London and Paris, in a half-ounce 1037 one can send letter for 8,000 miles by air, from England to South Africa, nt a cost of only 14d.

Eighteen years is a brief period in the development of any new method of transport. Yet, so far as British air travel is concerned, it has seen a Arst London-Paris route dayclop stage by stage until, at the present! time, the aircraft of Imperial Air- ways, and of its subsidiary and assoclated companies, are flying over Just on 30,000 miles of European and Empire

lines.

All the romance of air travel is borne vividly upon one's mind wben one remembers that it is just eighteen years, ow, since a Vimy biplane Belt Hounslow on a winter's morning on what was, in those days, the berole ndventure of 2 'blazing-the-trall' between England' and Australia. To- day, however, great mail-planes fly along this route as a matter of routine, signalling their progress alage by stofc, and adhering punctually to their time-schedules. But, when Ross and Keith Smith adventured across the Empire in 1919, landing-grounds were few and far between. Those first Australia Byers had no wireless by which to com- muntente with ground-stallons. Neither had they any organisation for effecting overhauls or repairs. They struggled, in fact, against difficulties innumerable; but in the end they won through, opening-up the. Australia route for many another feat of aeris1 skill and enterprise, and paving the way for the introduction, in due course, of regular commercial flying; and now to-day we have active work in hand for operating great new Em- pire flying-boats right through from England to Australia, and also for establishing a ground equipment to permit regular commercial night- flying-the goal aimed at being to operate ü day-and-night service which, as schedules are speeded-up, gradually, will bring Australia with- in a week of England.

Eighteen years have also seen i

the pageant of progress on

North Atlantic. From beraie pioneer Sights of 1910, fraught with the gravest "perit," we have moved to the com- mercial survey fights of 1937, carried out to schedule

1his all- important pecan roule, and acting es a preliminary to the establishment, in due course, of a regular alr-mall connecting existing Empire air-lines: with the airways of Canada and the United States.
