ROADSIDE CLASSES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

Teacher Attacks

Government

at Safety Congress

The attitude of the Government towards the campaign

to protect the children from road perils was described at the National Safety Congress in London recently as “far too complacent."

The complaint came in the address of Mr. W. J. Rodda, of Silverstone (Northants), representing the National Union of Teachers.

"We are condent," Mr.

Houtla

Raid, "think thousands of children are

alive to-day because of safety train-

int. But we are nis inced by the LETTERS TO THE

fact that there are more than a thoi-

sund children to bo killed by some

form of rund transport during the next twelve months.

"How can we, by mrnsures defence and education, Sve those children?

"Regular systematic training mut go on throughout the year.

ROADSIDE CLASSES

"A few minutes talk on the edge of a busy road will be for more effer- tive than an hour's talk in a class

room.

"I can say without fear of ron- tradiction that the attitude of the Government in the campaign it far too complacent.

"Every school to-day can obtain liberal upples of National Savings posters and literature, but we ask in vain for posters dirveling the children away from death."

Following are paints made by otiser speakers:

Councillor C. A. annam-Harris, vice-chairman, London Sufety First Council: "We huve got so used to hearing the cry of Wolff that the general publie nieed a deal of convinc- ing that the Wolf is really dan- gerous, even though they are aware of its presente.

Firemen Seek Cut in Hours - From 72 to 48

1

-

Proposals are under consideration to secure for Lon- don firemen a 48-hour week by instituting three-shift system. The present system is one of two shifts and a 72-hour week.

Acceptance of the application made by the men's representatives to the LCC. Fire Brigades Committee would necessitate the engagement of 918 extra men, including 100 sub-officers. The cost would be £216,000 year.

A section of opinion in the LC.C, belleves that this reform, which would bring the strength of the LC.C. Bre brigade from 2,000 to nearly 3,000, enn fairly be considered as a valuable nir raid precaution. As such the Government should bear some part of the cost.

REFORM FLEDGE

Mr. Edward Cruse, chairman of the Fire Brigades Committee, sald, recently:

"Wo are pledged to a revision of the 72-hour week for fremen, und some reform will inke place within the Ilfo of the present_council.

"Precisely how for it will go I am unable to say, The matter may corne up at a meeting of the committee in the Inst week of this month."
