Residents in the Colony know the work of this old-established Society well, and have supported it generous- ly, but for the benefit of newcomers it may be well to state briefly the aims of the Society and the work it undertakes.

CHURCH'S

1

MISSION

Sir:-It seems that both the Rev. J. R. Higgs und the Rev. H. W. Baines in their sermons on Sunday raised the moral issue of war and its justiflen- tion, and then shirked the

real unswer. Nothing cun Justify the taking of life, and this surely can be the only straight answer of Chris- tlan to the moral issue.

Of much greater value would have been a statement by those two re- presentatives of the Church concern- ing the Christian's attitude to the fundamental Causes of war. The causes are fairly obvious to any in- telligent person, and what is needed, more than anything else, is the will to eradicate them. The Christian cannot tolerate war, whether you call it an Imperialistic war, a war of defence, or a 'war Involving nothing but moral Issues. He cannot tolerate nny war because war is a means of sustaining and keeping alive those men to very factors which drive

docs urmed conflict. History

not show us that wors bring us any nearer to peace, except of such an artifelal nature that It is a mockery, s witness the peace of the last 10 years. Mun is driven to war by his own stupidity, his refusal to bay” “We will no longer tolerate the influences which crepłe war."

The very reason why the Covenant of the League of Nations is tottering (ns Mr. Balnes sadly and reluctantly ndmlta) is because the terms that Covenant include rights and privi- leges which, if insisted upon

each of the signatories, must inevitably nt some singe or another, lead to con- flict of opinion and later to war.

What we expect from the Church is a leadership in regimenting · public opinion to insist upon the removal of the causes of war. For the Church, or any other body for that master, calmly to sit back, airily deprecate that there is such a thing as war, and then to moralise on whether one should or should not kill one's bro- ther is a strango interpretation of Christ's teaching.

The fundamental Issue is not "Shall I go to war If somebody attacks the my country?", but "What are

onu

the factors which cause war, and how can I help to get rid of them?" This should be the church's mission on the Issue of war.

POLICE. PROBE FIRE'S CAUSE

SUSPICIOUS DISCOVERY AFTER OUTBREAK

A small fire broke out on the land- lag of the first floor of No. 379 Re- clamation Street, Mongkok, 2.45 o'clock this morning, when the partition and wall of the stairense

were scorched before the fames were extinguished by the inmates. The police and Fire Brigade wegs called, but their attendance was only a pre- cautionary measure.

|

An Investigation into the cause of the fire revealed a quantity of paper on the stairs, on which a smell of kerosone was detected. Further en- quiries are being made.

The house itself was not damaged at all, and no-one was injured.
