Out of a total of eighteen summ- nionses against the Manager of the Company, sald Mr. Evans, fourteen had been duplicated against the con-
ductors.
Inspector S. C. Sanders, who pro secuted, agreed to withdraw these and to proceed only summonies against the Manager.

Manager, Mr. monses against the Evans said that 12 were in respect of Route 3, which operated from Blake Pier via Garden Road to the Tai- versity, one was for the Happy Valley 10, and the re- route on October maining one for Route 8 at Road on October 9. The summonses had also all been taken out between 8.30 am, and 8. 50 a.m, and between 5.35 p.m. and 5.50 p.m., which were the rush hours to and from offices.

INCREASED FLEET The Bus Company was started in 1933, and took over from its predeces- sor a fleet of 55 buses which they had now increased to 81, which was a gain of 47 per cent. They were bound by the terms of their Government con- tract to maintain a fixed schedule on certain routes. It was impossible, if one route was overcrowded, to re- move from another route, as it meant they would be unable to maintain their schedule on the original route. Reference to the summonses would show that there was no lack of buses passing,
Four of the summonses had been taken out against four buses in the space of 20 minutes. That seemed to be the root of the trouble. Counsel asked his Worship to deal with the cases not on the ground that the buses were insuficient, but that the number of would-be passengers was a great deal too many.
In regard to Route 3, the Govern- meat originally required the Company to maintain a 10. minutes service, which could be done with four buses Tush ordinarily, and seven during hours. They were now required to operate a five minutes service, with three minutes service in rush hours, necessitating 12 buses on that route.
100 PER CENT. GAIN Trafic returns for the route since May had shown an increase of over 100 per cent, which was largely due to the enormous influx of people to the Colony from all parks of South China The traffic figure for May was 1,527 on this route, and for September 143,979. Every bus the Company owned that was available was now in service. The Govern ment, moreover, only allowed twenty-seater buses on this route, which was rather hilly and danger-
our.
On August 18, the Company order- ed four new buses from England, and on September 20, when raue re- turns showed no signs of dropping? further four were ordered. They had since been informed by the manu facturers that it was Impossible for delivery to be made before the New Year, and by the terms
