The Hongkong steamer Kaitangata, 1,9 83 tons, Williamson and Company, is blazing furiously a few miles out of this port. The ship is under charter to the Standard-Vacuum Oil Company here.

The China Navigation liner Nanning is standing by and has already rescued many of the officers and men of the doomed ship, but it is feared that a number of the Chinese seamen have perished.

H.M.S. Thracian is racing southward to render what assistance she can.

The Kaitangata is burning from stem to stern, her cargo of that no human kerosene and gasoline making her such an inferno could live seconds aboard.

The Kaitangata left Hongkong yesterday for Haiphong and when she first called for assistance at 2 a.m. to-day she was in latitude 20.41, longitude 11.2.10. That would put her roughly 120 miles from Hongkong.

It is learned in Frenelt cireles that if it is impossible to reach agreement at the Non- Intervention Committee meet- ing on the question of a token withdrawal, the French Govern- ment will not insist upon the point.

Paris is not willing to believe the obstacles fucing the Non-Intervention" Committee are insuperable, but the opinion is that it is difculi for the British and French governinents to accept the Italian request that de- cisions of the Committee during theso discussions should be taken unanimously. It is held this rule might easily paralyse the working of the Committee. It is thought that it may be possible to get the Soviet I representative to abstain from voting so that an effective solution could be renched.

Finally, strong objections are raised to Italy's refusal to bind herself to accept the International Commissions' Omures as to the number of volunteers serving in Spain. It is felt that the Italian claim for this is conceded, out commissions-Reuter.
