COLONY RELATIONS

Al the conclusion of the luncheon, Dr. Barbosu sald that it had given him very great pleasure to receive the lelier in August last an- nouncing the plan to visit Macao, with the approval of the British Colonial Office. Circumstances con- necled with the nresent political situation had caused its postpone- ment, but the occasion was, never- theless, a very agrecable one and it Kave him the greatest satisfaction to be able to veice appreciation of the honour conferred on Macno. He was extremely sorry to learn that "Mrs. Smith's state of health had pre- vented her from accompanying His Excellency Mr. Smith, but expressed the hope that she would soon be completely recovered.

The relations between Hongkong and Macao had always been fed by the most cordial spirit of good friend- ship; that was itself a reflex of the traditional alonce that had linked the governments of Portugal and Britain for centuries. The speakers stated that a personal ile which tached him to Hongkong was the charming manner in which he had maways been received there by ever, Governor he had had the honour o meeting-Sir Henry May, Bir Cecil Clementi, Sir William Peel, and, more recently, Sir Andrew Caldeco.. The gracious kindness that he ha received in Hongkong bad com pletely captivated him..
