ATTACK

SHOCK DOCTORS

WARNING AGAINST

FEE-SPLITTING

COUNTRY doctors shocked: London doctors just a bit cynical. This was the impres sion I got at the British Medical -Association's meeting at Belfast of the profession's reactions to Dr. A. J. Cronin's bitter novel attacking Harley Street and its methods (writes a Daily Herald special correspondent).

"LOTS OF QUACKS"

The book "The Citadel," is dis- played prominently in the reception hall of the conference, and it is belog eagerly discussed by doctors.

Most of the comment was critical of Dr. Cronin for "bringing his pro- fession into disrepute. Dul in pri- vate conversation with me many doctors admitted "that there was something in it" (writes the corres- pondent).

"A doorplate in Harley Street doesn't make n bad doctor into $1 brilliant consultant." said one minent member,

"A doctor

who is willing speculate-and Harley Street has been passing through bad times- can call himself a specialist without any special qualiftentions,

quack on the There are lots of Medical Register, and they do a grea! deal of harm to the true consultants, who are the pick of the profession.

A family doctor said he sent to a Harley Street specialist a patient suffering from Bevere headache. The practioner sus- pected a brain tumour. The specialist gave her a perfunctory examination and wrote out a prescription for aspirin. fee was 5 grs.

FEE-SPLITTING

The practice of fee-splitting--by which the practioner gets a "rake- off" of the specialist's tee for intro- ducing a patient to him-is regarded very gravely by the British Medient Association.

Dr. G. C. Anderson, the medical secretary, said to me-

"in 1933 the President of the General Medical Council issued a warning pointing out that any prac- titioner convicted before the courts of fee splitting would be struck off the register."

How Britons

Lived 3,000 Years Ago

THREE THOUSAND years before

Christ, when Britons went forth fram their caves into the open ale, they dug holes in the earth of basin shape, and covered them with boughs of trees, says a London journal,

Relles of these pit dwellings have been discovered in a field at Farn- ham, only a few fect from the sur- facc.

Mr. W. F. Rankine, a local school- master, who is an enthusiastle orch- aeologist, suspected the presence of the dwellings.

Dr. Graham Clark, of Cambridge University, was called in and excavN- tlon work began. Dr. Clark uncurth- ed the dwellings.

In one of the pits was found a fire- blackened earth and many fints which the ancient Britons used in heating water and cooking.

They obtained water from 1 nearby spring, which is still in ex- istence, and heated it in skins by dropping hot flints into them.

Hundreds of delicately fashioned Bint implements used for catching Ash and for making spearheads were also found.

Dr. Clark said that the dwellings represented the earllest house known In Western Europe. They were the earliest type of artificial dwelling.
