BRITISH TROOPS CALLED OUT TO GUARD COMMUNITY

Tientsin, July 29 (12.14 p.m.).

At 10 a.m. to-day Japanese forces were reported fleeing in several of the sectors surrounding this city, concentrating on the East Arsenal outside Tientsin. The Japanese concession beleaguered, and apparently the numerous civilians there are defended by few troops, the majority having been called elsewhere where pressure has been heaviest.

A few shells have fallen inside the concession, for which reason the Japanese military interview with foreign correspondents has been postponed. The United Press messenger coolies have stopped work due to the danger of attempting to ride through the streets by bicycle, even in the concessions.

The 15th United States Infantry troops are patrolling American Government property only.

The French Army's armoured cars, manned by An- namite crews, are cruising the French concession, the boundaries of which are closed.

CHINESE SUCCESSES

At 9.40 a.m. a Chinese Army communique stated the Chinese troops had recaptured the old Belgian concession area, where most of the Japanese cotton mills are located, and also the East Railway Station, where fighting is continuing.

There is serious fighting also around Nankai University.

The communique added that 100 Chinese casualties

had so far been counted.
