ET a humorist to catch the humorist Anyway, Mr. Lea- cock has caught that wild, proud mustang. Transatlantic Humour, in his cunning lasso.

He begins at the beginning with the Pilgrim Fathers. The outlook was grim. "Here on the apot was the Indian, probably the least humorous character recorded in history. He took his pleasure seriously-with a toma- hawk."

A child called Tabatha Morgus was, it seems, America's first humorist. She laughed and played in church on Feb- ruary 24, 1070, and her parents were fined three shillings and sixpence. "Someone ought to put up a monu- ment to that wicked little girl."

Drawing, gum-chewing Will Rogers is the last humourist mentioned here. A hotel was named after him in Clar more. a six-storey building which he boasted had more bathrooms than Buckingham Palace. "I used to envy General Grant and Jesse James de cause they and cigars. named after them," he mused, But, sucks, now I've kinda got it on 'em."

And, in between, come Ben Franklin. Washington Irving. Jusli Billings, Artemus Ward, Bret Harte. Mark Twain (the Westerniser and humaniser of American humour), Finlay Peter ("Mr. Dooley ") Dunne, George Ade. O. Henry, Ring Lardner, Robert Bench ley and other uproarious ones.

Topical, ephemeral, stick and syndi- cated. contemporary transatlantle humour is the vellest aspect of the English languago - to-day, Allacking on almost a world front, It is as infec- tious as the plague. And there is never any shadow of doubt as to its pince of If you doubt me, read "The Gang- ster Who Wouldn't Talk" in this wise and witty volume.

A NEW KIND OF ROBOT

From Baltimore, U.S.A., it is reported:-

Police here are using a new traße signal that forces car drivers to slow down before tak- ing a bad curve.

The signal normally shows red. About 450 feet either side of the bend sound detectors con- vert the hum of an approaching car into electrical impulses which control the light.

If the car is travelling st more than the maximum of 15 m.p.h, the signal changes to a flashing amber, and drivers who fail to alacken speed are stopped by the red light.

Then the driver must wait for another car to pass over the dectector before

the light

changes to green.

Motorists who drive on the wrong side of the road are also penalised, for the sound detec- tore only work on

on the correct trafle channel.

Added safeguard is that when a car starts" on the bend 'the woord "car" is flashed by lights on the other side of the bend to warn oncoming traßle.

HIS is a much more ambitious book than, Mr. Leacock's.

Witness the section headings. "Why We Laugh Like Human Beings," "Laughing at Too-Much and Not-Enough," "The Prevall- ing Toples of Laughter" And so

on.

Mr. Eastman warns us of his in- tention to explain all jokes. "The proper and logical outcome will be, not only that you will not laugh now, but that you will never laugh again. So prepare for the descend- ing gloom."

Well, some of his laughter- psychology is a little involved. And some of his definitions are argu- able. But his sound sense and his quotations make this a Very Bright

The Life of John Sell Cotman

| URPRISING that the mercan- tile world of his day allowed the painter Cotman to live at all. After all, what claim had he to survival?

His fickle temperament made him useless as a hairdresser (believed to be His father's tradė), insincere as an anti- quarian and none too reliable as a drawing-master-three mbtiers which the world of his day well understood.

But John Bell Colman wanted to record and create beauty-to discover now ways to do it. And the beauty he wanted to create was intellectual in an era of sentiment, cinasical when roman- sicism was blossoming:

Not but that Cotman tried year after year to hit it off with the con- temporary public: that is the pily of this tale. He just' couldn't do it. He couldn't help bursting dut again and working out his own problem his own way for himself-and so for pas- terity! Moreover, it appears that the public, as it always does, suspected the works which he painted insin cerely, to try to please it.

Then there was his evil genius of a benefactor-Dawson Turner, the Yar- mouth banker. The honourable but humble employments which this kindly business man provided for. Cotman absorbed mast of the energies of his prime. Without them, he might not have lived. With them, miserable n3 much of his life was, he did at least have his outbursts.

In fact, the character of Turner shows itself much more clearly than Cotman'a in this book.

The root cause of Colman's lis was the age he lived in (born 1302, dled 1842). After the great patron- age, before the time when a vastly en- larged upper bourgeoisie got culture- lust and was ready to support a fair body of original artists.

Little wonder that mental derange- ment ahowed itself at times in the tem- perament of Cotman and of his sons. An artistic temperament" deca not tend to increase the inconse of a £200- n-year geniust

This blography is pedestrian, some- times even annoying-yet the life of any man told in such detail has an in- terest-and this was Cotman. Bealdes. the constant cross-references to over a hundred and fifty black-and-white reproductions (and colour Iraniis- plece) provide relief to the sold narra. Live.
