1. CHANCE OF PRACTICE
Why does talent run in such family lines? Heredity? Environment? Chance?
Dr. Blacker, secretary of the Eugenic Society, said: "We have not prepared a memorandum on the zubject of athletie familles, although we have made a film of the Phelps famliy.
"One cannot say definitely whether buch phenomena are hereditary or environmental. Certainly physique is largely hereditary--the fine eye,' the perfect co-ordination of muscle.
"Then the daughter of, say, a golling family has more chance of practice, more opportunities of tui- tion, more 'atmosphere of golf than

WHEN IS A TIE A DRAW?
1937.
Curious Catch At Wicket
(By A. W. T. Langford)
London, June 15.
On Saturday the Midland: Bank declared at 105.for nine, and in reply Lensbury also scored 105 for mine. What was the result? A tle or a draw.
For years matches ending in this manner, have given rise to considera- able controverty, BO in 1027 'the M.C.C. added the following to Law 2, under the heading "Ono Day Maiches": "N.B.—A tie included in

If I may venture to say so, even this note, on Law 2, which begins, "The Match, unless played out, shaji be decided by the First Innings," in a little ambiguous, and, judging by one's own experience, there are quite a number of people who take "played out" to mean that there are no further wickets to fail; and, therefore, Lansbury, who had, one wicket left on Saturday, drew with the Bank,
Actually "played out" refers to the arranged timo for the drawing of stumps, and if the scores are level when this occurs the match is reckoned, a ile, regardless of the wickets in hand by the side batting
second.
Obviously, then, the Midland Bank- Lensbury game was a tle, and not a draw.
CURIOUS COINCIDENCES
Visitors to East Molesey on Sunday watched the home team and the Middlesex Nomads try the experl- ment of the 8-ball over."
Colonel V. I. Robins has kindly supplied me with same figures which bring to light some rather curlous caincidences.
For example, it will be observed that both teams batted for exactly the same number of overs, and both took exactly the same time. Further, in each innings a bowler bowled unchanged; caen took seven wickets, with only one run separating the runs scored off them.
To allow for the falling of wickels, and the different types of batamen, the innings are divided into periods of ten overs each, with the following Auctuations:

wickets for 44, is aged 52. L. May- hew, much faster than Stolt, took seven for 43...
It was the unanimous opinion of the players concerned that there is nothing to object to in the longer over, and that it definitely saved time.
One ployer suggested that the lengthened over worried the batsman more than the bowler, especially when the bowler was on top." but that, of course, is part of the game.
TIE ON “RE-COUNT?
And now to revert to te matches. The Jesters paid their annual visit to Little Marlow on Saturday, and after a "re-count" found that they had equalled the home team's 174.
What made the match out of the ordinary was that J. Yates look all ten Marlow wickets for 07 in 21.4 overs. How often has this feat been performed when the game has ended "all square"?
It was certainly Yates's day, be cause in addition to his wickets he hit a dashing 60, and made 20 of the 21 pul on for the tenth wicket
ལ་ to bring the scores level.
One other unusual incident. Play- ing for Horley 11. v. Kingswood 11., Kingswood, R. Wavell, the wicket-
at
keeper, was standing up close to P. E. Selby, a fast bowler, who sent down a ball which hit the off-stump, breaking a ball in two. Not only did Wavell catch the ball, but also both pieces of the broken bail.
