welfare agree that -children to-day stay up too late

at night.

For no apparent reason, many young chil- dren stay up till 10 and 11 o'clock most nights; in fact, they do a fifteen-hour day, standing and walking about in crowded streets and shops, sit- ting in staffy rooms.

Lack of sleep is enough to make children ill;' constipation, dyspepsia, insomnia, irritability and ill-temper, inability to concentrate, and lack of vitality-those are some of the complaints caused by late ghts. It is literally cruel to prevent chil- dren from getting the sleep they need.

TESTS to prove this were carried out on two groups of children, boys and girls, aged be- tween three and eight years. Each group had the same food. Group A were given good, firm beds, warm, light blankets, well tucked in. windows open at night, except in fogs. The children were put to bed after a warm bath or wash down, and had an average of ten and a half hours sleep every night.

Group B slept on the beds they given nt home-some เปิด were .... £,500,000

They wake up dull and red, their senses are never alert, they are pale and moody, and often grow up apathetic-a character- Istic which they have developed in self-defence. THE HAPPY RETURN By C. B. Forester (Michael Joseph, 78. Ed.)

VIA HONOLULU

BY EMPRESSA

V

`ENSATILITY is Mr. Forester's middle name, but ho has gone down to the sea again for the scene of his latest tale.

Captain. Hornblower, commanding the Lydia, in enlling the Pacifle under secret orders to assist with arma ami powder a rebellion against a Spanish colony in Bouth America. That, sayA the British Government, will teach the niards which side to take in the long, rolling world-dispute between France and England

The Lydia's cargo is delivered to a particularly repulsive, brutal and in- sane tyrant-and used to sack a town). But there is a Spanish warship cruis. ing in the same waters--a.vessel maro heavily armed than Hornblower's. Nevertheless the Lydia Aguts and cap :ures the Natividad and hands her over to the rebel chief.

Hornblower heaves a sigh of relief. But Now he can turn for home. Another Spanish ship apprats, thaking the friendliest signals: moreover, her captain has a message for Hornblower. Britain's policy has changed. Upmin has come over to her in the struggle with Napoleon--and Wellington is in the Peninsular.

Nothing to

That rebel Business? worry about there; the chief is clearly Incapable and ripe for assassination by his own men. Liut there remains the very awkwardi nitair of the well-armed Nailvidna, now obviously in the wrong hands.

And, to complicate matters till more, a woman insists on travelling home on the Lydia-no less a woman than Lady Barbara Wellesley, the alster of the Iron Duke.

How the Lydin fights the Natividad again and sinn her-how Hornblower rounds the Horn-how he finally deli vers Lady Barbara to Ils Majesty's Admiral at St. Helena-all this is told in the swinging, sen-stinging, com- piclely convincing style which is second nature to Mr. Forester.

A truly thrilling yarn, with puzzled. plucky. honest, Almost-a- Boncheud hero and countless close- ups of the perils of sall and diplomacy and the King's Navce a hundred years DEO.
