CORRESPONDENCE
Oldest Regiment
To the Editor,
The Hongkong Telegraph.
Sir, I notice in your issue yester- day that you mention The Royal Scols as being the oldest regiment in the British Army. That is not car- rect. The Royal Scots are the First of Foot, admittedly.
The oldest Regiment in the British Army is The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) the Third of Foot.
The
Buffs
were formed in 1572 from The Trained Bands of London and were sent to Seniland in the 100 Years' War. On returning to Eng- land they were known as the Third of Foot.
1 do not know the date of formu- tion of The Royal Seats. I have no Army List,
X-BUFF.

RUGGER REFEREES IGNORE RULES
(Continued from Page 5.)
It as the beneat conferred on the game would be enormous,
AN EXAMPLE
Only recently I saw a match in which a visiting player was penalised for not playing the ball with the foot when he was brought to the ground and his arms were free.
On protesting to the referee be was informed that in that part of the country it was the invariable proc- tice, and the referee added that he wus not concerned with what was the general custom in England.
Such a thing would not be possible if referees met to receive expert in- struction and a common Interpreta- tion of the laws.
