WILD BATTLE FOR BERMEO

Italians Wield Knives Against Militiamen

ANARCHISTS

REVOLT IN

CATALAN CAPITAL

Guernica, May 5. Despatches from the front relate that in a hand-to- hand encounter between Insurgents of the Black Arrow (Italian) Brigade and Basque militiamen, the former successfully defended their positions in Bermeo and beat off counter-attacks.

Flood water had soaked the ammunition of the men in lower Bermeo and they fought with knives and bayonets. Some, standing knee deep in water, preserved. their bombs from injury and tossed these among the advancing Loyalists, whose retreat was speeded up by the appearance of 30 bombers and a number of pursuit planes over the defences, spitting lead and high explosive.-- United Press.

He declared front Italy intend- ed to increase her cruiser force and proportionately strengthen her other categories of naval armament.

the ncar "Italy will make, in future, the necessary efforts to have a navy commensurate with the im- portance of its vital functions, the defence of the country: and its ex- pansion, and with Italy's prestige in the world," said Admiral Cavagnari. -Reuter.
