DEPOPULATION MENACE IN

DOMINIONS

Luxuries Are Competing With British Parenthood

Decay Of Old Beliefs

THE spectre of depopula-

tion threatens the Do- minions as well as Britain, and the causes are likely to increase rather than de- crease in intensity, accord- ing to Dr. G. F. McCleary, Senior former ly deputy Medical Officer to the Minis- try of Health.

For more than 30 years Dr.' McCleary has been preaching the significance of the continued decline in the British birth-rate, and in this excellent book, "Menace of British Depopula-| tion," (George, Allen and Un- win, da. Gd.), he speaks with ị full support from our population experts...

The more widespread ́use of birth- control, the advertisement of luxuries calculated to compete with parent- hood, a growing appreciation of comfort on the part of the publle, and-most of all-the decay of "oldj bellefs" are listed by Dr. McCleary as the chief agencies now making for depopulation.

A new bellef in social stability, a hew faith in the future of the race, and a heightened sense of the gift

ore noetled, Dr. McCleary suggests, if the "grout creative func- tion of parenthood" is to be revived.

It is only in recent years, he points out, that h satisfactory Index has become available for egilmating future population ffends on the basis of present statistics. This is the "net reproduction rate" devised by Dr. Kuczynski, now working in London, which records the number of girl bables who will, an the average, be borne by every newly-born girl. A not reproduction rate of "1" is neces- sary if the population is to be main- tained. Comparable figures

are: Great Britain, 734; Australia, 1970; and New Zealand, 078,

Of all the predominantly "white" Domialons, he points out, Canada is the only one that is more than re-

THE MIGHTIEST CONGREGATION OF SEA POWER EVER ASSEM- BLED WILL BE REVIEWED BY KING GEORGE VI OFF SPITHEAD ON MAY 20 AS THE BRITISH NAVY'S PART IN THE CORONATION CELE. BRATIONS-IF THE WORLD IS STILL AT PEACE,

Should a tense international situation prevail, the naval show will be held just the same always providing that Britain is not at war-but on a smaller scale.

If all is peaceful, 33 nations are expected to send one warship placing her present population-and, Cach, probably their finest, to honour King George. Present plans call for the entire British-home-fleet, most of the Mediterranean. fleet and a few visitors from the far away China station to gather at Spithead in homage to His Majesty.

even In Canada, the birth-rate has been progressively falling.

Australia it is added, could support at least twice her present population, and New Zealand a substantially In- creased' population. Without, there-
