Where Are the New Makers of

Test Cricket History?

SHORTAGE OF ALL-ROUNDERS

During the last two or three years many of the players who have made history in Test cricket have dropped out of the limelight, Hobbs, Hendren, Jardline, Sutcliffe, Tate, und Woolley England; Woodfull, Ponsford, and Grimmett, of Australia; and Bell, Nupen, and Vincent, of South Africa, all appear to have ended their careers as Test cricketers.

Who have stepped into their shoes? Who are the leading batsmen, The bowlers, wicketkeepers and all-rounders of international cricket? following figures, complete to May 1, 1937, provide the answers to these questions:

These figures emphasise the current shortage of all-rounders. Com- pared with men like M. A. Noble, J. M. Gregory, and W. W. Armstrong, McCabe's all-roundness is not impressive; and only a partisan could com- pare the four English representatives will predecessors like Rhodes, F. S. Jackson, J. W. H. T. Douglas, and Hirst.

So long as this famine lasts Test elevens must go into the field with "tails" of uncomfortable length.
