"Dettol,' the modern antiseptic, is a highly effective weapon against germs of septic infection. It is the gentle antiseptic-clean, clear, pleasant to use, yet deadly to every germ. Non-poisonous, non-staining—yet promptly used in time of accident it may save you untold pain and danger. Never neglect a cut or scratch, however small. Even a tiny break in the skin is a wide-open gateway for the germs

David was the ringleader. But, when he fought his way into the jungle of wealth, Kelih, by theu a clever doctor, became his hend man in the series of rakda which made him a financial dio- Lator and a multi-millionaire, And

Inpsed into madness....

The record of his rise and fall is n savage one You will be amused at his beginnings and exhilarated at his victories over leaser bandits. But the crux of the story is reached when he comes to rule Blockton-on-Tyldesley?. his tentacles stretch across the country, and he realises that Stockton is a small England and England a small world.

Having got the wealth and the power, what is he to do with it? All his financial operations are based on idle money. But what are you to do when the savings mount and clamour for their interest and you have reached the limit of your markets and are faced with ineffective demand?

Within the frame of the present system, there is nothing you'can do to prevent the whole crazy structure from toppling and crashing down.

David and Keith have each a plan for getting out of the impasso. Ceith wants to subsidiso Fascisma so that the

workers will be roaded to revolt and establish Socialism. David wants to play a lone hand and start Sociallam in his own high-handed fashion!

Both see the problem as a choice, between two forms of conscription, be- tween conscription for peace and pros- perity and responsibility and conscrip tion for war and poverty and irro sponsibility."

Fantastic as it sounds, the position is well argued and dramatically alaged. Your particular standpoint in the gigantic muddie which calls itself Economics will naturally affect your appreciation of Devil Take the lind mort. But you will be absorbed in it anyway.

And you will wish that more novels had such stuffing and forthrightness and insistent vitality,

Despite excellent descriptions of booms and alumps and their offect on the fo and luck of Napoleon Nicholas and his family, the general picture 18 much Icas powerful..

I felt that this novel needed the love interest and the social back- ground so competently supplied, whorcas Mr. Tilsley's David takes these things in his seven per cent. stride.

LONG, sprawling, but con- tinuously compelling novel by a man wh was saven years old when the Germans overran Belgium and the North of France. Quietly and relent- lessly he tells you what it is ilko to have your home occupled by foreign troops.

There are scenes of terror, such as the destruction of the subuch of. Lilio which dared to resist the invaders. But, on the whole.. this is a revelation of how the war powder had to be taken without the patriotic Jammi

All Germans nie so shown as brutes or all Frenchmen as heroes. On the contrary. With characteristic thoroughness the Germans devolop their plans for administering the oc- cupied territory-and blatant injus- tico would have made those plans unworkable.

They decreed that everything had to be sacrificed to war needs, and it was so... If you submitted, life went on fairly normaliy-only the sacrifices grew as the years dragged on £ you did not submit, your existence becamo intolerable. You had no home, no work and no rations; you and anyone who sheltered you went in constant drond.

The Germans, of course, did not want to be forced to shoot you 'or electrocute you on the frontier wires they simply desired you to take part in the work of providing food and materials for them and their armies. In short, they were just-with the ruthless justice of the military molockL
