PRINT "DODGING”

Pictures may be improved during enlarging by controlling tones with a "shadow brush,"

WHEN na advanced amateur or professional photographer shown some of his beautiful malon pictures to a group of interested but uninitiated people, some of them are sure to ask questions such as

30902

"low in the world do you get those lovely tones? How did you make this picture so dark in this part and light in that? How did you. Ket the soft effect in this one? How did you got the light to shine so brightly on the principal object and nenrcely at all on the rest of the plo ture? How do you make those ob Jects in the shadowy parts dim yet visible; and objects in the light parts to stand out so distinctly? My caniora won't take pictures like Chat."

And the cryptic answer is likely to bio, "Nolther will mine, exactly." "Then, how do you got all these different gradations in shadow tones? Theso pictures are like paint- ings. Do you touch up the negative with something?"

And the answer will be, "No, I do not touch up the negativo; I dodgo the print.”

"Dodge the print? What do yout nean-d'odge?'"

Ton comes an explanation of a method whereby a very ordinary picture, as recorded on the nega tive, may aften be transformed into I work of art in the process of mak ing an enlarged print of it. "Dodg Jn." in the alang of photography, means interrupting some of the Hight passing through the negallys to the sensitized paper during the printing.cf the picture. "Dodging"

SHANGHAI

may be done in contact printing. but more effectively in making on. largements, it is done by holding something opaque between the light source and the paper, such as o place of cardboard, la such a way as to keep the light from striking a certain area for a certain portion of the limo. Thus, that part which continues to receive the full light will print darker than the part from which the light is hold back, In other words, the light is caused to "dodre" a curtain area.

Virtually, the shadow from the cardboard in the hands of the pho- tographer is used as a paint brush, It serves to light the dark parts. In another way, a priut is "dodged" by using a piece of cardboard with a holo in it. The holo lets through a pench of Hght, which is manipu. lated over the surface of the paper and serves to darkon the light parts. The intelligent use of a "hadow brush" or "light brush" in the fash- lon requires a preliminary aludy of the negativo or a contact print be it would ordinar

register in order to discorer where "dadglag" would improve the picture. Ofton it means a number of trials before tha result is entisfactory.

Amateurs who do not qulargo tbolr own negailves may suggest to their photo falsher how they think a print may be improved by "dodging," and ask him for a special job on it. Of course, the greater eat- lefaction comes from dolag this work yourself. But that is the way many of the lovely effects wo soo in salon photographs are obtained.
