London Paper Fears Its Collapse But Work Still Continuing

London, Apr. 8. The Evening Standard's diplo. matic correspondent says to-day that the Sugar Conference hera is already "near flasco, and in danger of breaking up." The renson, he says, is that countries have presented statis- tics of necessary sugar produc- tion which others hold to be excessive.

The correspondent draws attentien to the present occupation of the con- ference, which is whittling ench country's maximum requirements.

Actually, it is felt in some circles, the conference faens the possibility of cut of 20 per cent, in quo as, is result of the production of statis- ties showing the 1996-37 "free sugar not have been mark

BRITISH FIRM:

NO EXPORT

Crystal Palace trustées have accepted the tender of a British firm, which was in competition with German and other Con- tinental firms, for the purchase of the scrap left after the fire.

Twenty-five tenders were submitted to the trustees, who last month decided to accept the tender of Messrs. T. W. Ward, Ltd., iron and steel merchants, of Fenchurch Street, E.C.

"The contractors will also be responsible for clearing the site after all the valuable material has been removed," Sir Henry Buckland, general manager of the Palace said.

"If 15,000 tons of iron are recovered we shall realise between £40,000 and £50,000,"

A voluntary clause in Messrs. Ward's tender promises not to export any of the debris.

An official of Messrs. Ward told a News) Chronicle representative.

"We made this voluntary offer to keep the scrap in this country, because there is a shortage.

"The debris is made up of scrap iron, and steel and cast iron-00 per cent. of it is cast iron.
