$40,000,000 FOR NEW H.K. DEFENCES
Two Further Battalions For Colony
SEVERAL SQUADRONS OF R.A.F. BOMBERS EXPECTED SHORTLY
Before the end of this year approximately $20,000,000 will be spent by Britain in strengthening the defences of Hongkong.
A like sum is to be spent next year.
This huge appropriation is included in the Army Estimates, and is in addition to regular commitments for maintenance of the garrison.
Approximately $1,000,000 is to be spent on defensive works on the mainland.
Provision is being made, in new construc- tions, for an increase in the garrison from the present full brigade of infantry (four battalions) to six battalions. It is probable that the first of the new battalions will arrive early next year.
In addition to this huge Army expenditure a record sum is being set aside for Royal Air Force development. It is likely that several squadrons of R.A.F. bombers will be stationed here. The main R.A.F. station will probably be removed from Kai Tak to Kam Ling, in the New Ter- ritories, Kai-Tak being used for civilian purposes ̄and for R.A.F. seaplanes.
NEW HEADQUARTERS
Present Army headquarters, which are housed in portion of the old
Murray Barracks, are to be removed

The old Military/Hospital in Bowen Road is to be reconstructed and en- larged at a total cost of $1,000,000 and work on this job will commence In the near future.
New barracks at Stanley Peninsula, which is to become a fortifled area, will cost $750,000 (£38,000). Pre- liminary work on this accommoda- tion has already commenced.
A total of approximately $1,000,000 is to be spent on defensive works on the mainland. Most of this money will be spent in constructing new roads, presumably to anti-aircraft positions.

Simultaneously, it was learned from Rome that a spokesman of the Japanese Embassy had stated that an Italian-Japanese political accord would shortly be reached.
Meanwhile, Britain investigated the report of the landing of Italian volunteers at Cadiz on March 5, a fortnight after the ban on intervention came into force.
