Wake Island, Uncle Sam's remote little atoll in the mid-Pacific, has blossomed out as "a non-contiguous territory," worthy of a place in statistical tabulations of the Department of Commerce.
The tiny three-islet geographical gem whose lagoon serves as a base for Pan-American Airways clippers en route to Manila and soon to Hongkong was scarcely known even to atlas-makers a few years ago. Even the seabirds preferred the less isointed Isle of Midway, with the sociability of a cable station, before the airmen settled at Wake and built a tourist hotel.
