In Moody Celebration
MOVING SCENE
IN
ALBERT HALL
By HUGH REDWOOD
THERE was one moment of spiritual.
intensity during the Moody centen- ary celebration at the Albert Hall to which I can recall no parallel.
It came at the end of a talk by Pre- bendary Carlile, 90 years old, the beloved Chief of the Church Army.
He had recalled the days when he was one of D. L. Moody's humble helpers. He had made us laugh with his anecdotes; he had brought before us a vivid picture of the man who could sway thousands but whose concern all the time. was for single souls.
'Bowler-Hat Job'
For Hero
With Many Lives
NE of the most spectacular sub- marine commanders during the war, who had many hairbreadth escapes, has been appointed to one the British Navy's "bowler hat jobs"- Director of Dockyards.
of
He is Vice-Admiral C. P. Talbot, C.B., D.S.O., who takes up his duties on May 1.
Admiral Talbot, who has had nearly 40 exelting years in the Navy, voluntered for submarines In 1803 when they were little more than "Un elgars."
In 1914 he was in command of EU, one of the first
Harwich,
Then, suddenly, putting aside, his notes, he two submarines to enter Heligoland Bight, and was all took us to the shores of Galilee. In a breaking rammed by a British craiser during the battle off voice he bade us listen to Christ commanding Peter to feed His sheep, asking him: "Lovest thou God?"
And while he held the great audience gripped he besought us to stand to our feet and quietly repeat with him Poter's answer: "Lord thou knowest that I love Thee."
Seven thousand people did as he asked them. I can hear them now, and I shall hear them for a long time, speaking almost as one person, their voices fading away into stillness that had in it something of tears. At the other end of the emotiona! seate came the singing of "Hold the Fort." They song it, those 7,000 people, with tremendous fervour.
Lord Aberdeen, who presided, was the first of a great array of speakers. "A REAL BURNING FACT" There was the Bishop of Norwich to remind us that Moody put in- dividual consecration before schemes and policies.
There was Sir Thomas Inskip to declare that "conversion is a reali burning fac
fact," and that one of the greatest needs of the Ume is faith in the power of the living word recreate men in God's image.
Then come Dr. Alexander Martin, Prebendary Carfile, and after them Commander R. G. Studd, "a monu- ment to Moody" and the grandson of a man who was one of Moody's
converts.
Fought Destroyers
In 1915, when he was a commander he fouled a submarines trap off Borkum Ri.
After trying in vain to get clear, he was forced to come to the surface, where a Zeppelin was waiting and watching.
He dived again, and after an hour's heelie struggle, during which he was continually bombed, he got clear.
Next day he tackled three German destroyers and blew the stern off one-a-feat for whleb he got the D.5.0.
Two days inter be attacked and sank a German.U- bont and was awarded a bar to his D.S.O.

with him an echo of the celebrations beyond the seas.
Very fittingly it was given to Dr. Dinsdale Young to bring the meeting to a close. As a young theological student, he told us, he asked Moody for his autograph. Mr. Moody wrote in his album: "Dr. L. Moody, Preach the Word." "I've been doing It now for 10 years," said Westminster's)
