FRENCH PREMIER'S HINTS TO HUSBANDS

Blum's Love

Book

Shocks France

Paris, March 1.

M. LEON BLUM, Prime Minister of

France, has shocked his fellow countrymen by writing a book on marri age advancing views which have astonish- ed even broadminded Parisians.

Throughout France they are discussing this book which M. Blum wrote in his youth, and which has just been reprinted. It sets forth the Socialist Premier's views on love and marriage.

"One of the chief evils of modern marriage," M. Blum writes, "is that it unites a man who has passed through various stages of experience to a, woman who has not yet reached them,

"Love and marriage are two different things. One should repeat to young girls the truth that marriage is a necessary Institution, but should

not be entered before instinct has lost its power.

"My advice to young people is 'Collect experience!' The more ex- perlence one brings to morringe the happler married life will be.

"A wife must acquire that know- ledge of fe which is absolutely necessary for happy marriage. This is not merely the knowledge of how

Gresford-Village of Whisperers

WIDOWS' PLEA TO FORGET GRESFORD, MARCH 1.

OVERNIGHT, THIS TINY MINING HAMLET

BEEN TURNED BY THE REPORT OF THREE MEN INTO A VILLAGE OF WHISPER- ING TONGUES.

The three men were Sir Henry Walker, Chief Inspector- of Mines, Mr. John Brass, the coalowners' nominee, and Mr. Joseph Jones, President of the Mineworkers' Federation. They issued three differing reports on the Gresford mine disaster.

Deep beneath this bleak industrial countryside the bodies of nearly 260 miners, are entombed shattered by the ghastly ex- plosion of September, 1984.

Reawakened Agony

Above ground to-day their mothers, widows, workmates, friends and even orphans are discussing in hushed voices the reports on their great tragedy.

And everywhere the women were listening mutely, wonder-i ingly. For them the publication of the report has reawakened the agony they have been trying to forget,

Two men walk sombroly through Gresford to-day-Mr. Harold Thomas, who is accused by Mr. Joseph Jones of sending a rescue party forward without a life-line or reserve brigade; and Mr. William Bonsall, former manager of the pit, who is ac- cused of fifteen breaches of the Coal Mines Act.

Clear Consciences

Burley Harold Thomas did not hesitate in his reply: "The inquiry was a farce," he said emphatically. "Those of us who are involved have clear consciences, and we are confident we shall be cleared of all responsibility.

"We minera are having a meeting to discuss these reports, and we are awaiting the result of the debate in Parliament."

But possibly the most tragic figure in Gresford is Mr. Wil liam Bonsall, who now works at his son's garage. He looked wan and weary when he was interviewed at the garage.

"Please," he said quleily, "do not ask me any questions.

I am sorry, but I cannot say anything yet.”

The last word and perhaps the most significant was said by

a woman dressed in wornblack clothes.

"My man lles in that plt,” she

said. "No amount of criticism

can bring him back now, I want

to forget. I cannot find it in me to blame anyone now.

YEAR'S SUCCESSES

More and more big industrial undertakings are setting up balanced teams of research workers, including chemists, physicists, engineers, and where necessary blologists, to solve particular problems or to develop new products,

This method has already led to the stendy improvement of ciectric lamps, to the

the position this country has won high-definition television, to the development of the conversion of cool into oll, and to the growth of the new plastics industry.

in

During the past year alone this method of scientifle approach has re- sulted in:

A method of reducing milk waste 3,000,000 gullons a year, which is equal to saving of £50,000 a year to the industry. A process for producing unshrink-

Discovery that the flavour of bacon is adversely affected if the pig is hurried on his walk to the slaughter house.

INCREASED GRANTS

In 1032-33 industry contributed £167,370 to research associations; by last year the figure had grown to

£232,408.

In consequence, Government grunts to the industrial research associations have grown over the same period from £39,238 to £107,451,
