fa natural for an amateur pho- tographer, according to his tastes and interests, to become intrigued with one kind of picture subject: animals, machinery, trees, sky. scraparb, wild Mo, marine views, and what not. The result, often, in that he finds himself pursuing a fasclanting hobby within a hobby--- searching for and photographing in- teresting types of his favorite ple ture subject.

One of the most enjoyablo and challenging of one-subject hobbles is making portraits of cats. You soon learn that the maturo ent is an animal of many expressions, and that ho rarely fails to reward you with an interesting one. You dis cover, also, that cals hayo indi- viduality, even those of the samo breed, Consequently, in making cat portraits you obtain a variety of distinctive studios.

Sometimes-and this is the chal lenging part of eat photography-- you head something more than pho- tographic skill to bo successful. When it comes to posing for the camera, the feline is often à por vorad creaturo, Dogs beyond tho puppy stage ato generally obedient, but, to koop & cat in front of the lens, it is usually necessary to on- tertain him. you then, Thomas te likely to "tako a walk" out of the vlow finder, with complete Indif ference to what you say to him or about him. Ho has a mind of his own Hasco...there will be times when you will nood Christian pa tionce and an assistant to recover

the cat. Especially outdoors, when Thomas is in a lively mood, you nmy, Ond that the best you can get is 9/10 backyard and 3/10 cat, Ou tho other hand, Thomas loves to lie in the sun, espacially after a good meal, and then, usually, you find him a most tractable model.

Inside the house the chancos are always good because hero a cat is generally quieter and disappearing acts can bo provented, Hero, too, you conmore easily arrange a contrasting background. The surest way to calch a pose is. to use a flash bulb. Flood light lamps socht to cause most cata to lie down and hask. Cats, however, being Inquisitive, like to look out of windows for long parlods, giving you a chance to creep up on them and ́suap a good pleture by daylight.

A most unoful "accessory before the fact" for eat pieturos is a. por. trait attachmont over your regu. lar lens permitting close-ups within arm's length. But, if you do not use a portrait attachmont, be sure your fo- cus is correct so that the image of the cat will be quite sharp. Then you can mask out the surrounding part of the negative to obtain a big- image enlargoniant as in the ple turce shown abavo.

Remember that the typical physi cal charactor!siles of cata are their whjakors and the liquid gleam in their oyes. The one needs a contrast. Ing background; the other, It must be confessoć, nocds luck with the light reflections. If you succeed in revealing both, you are a good cat photographer.
