THE FOUNDING OF THE DIOCESE OF VICTORIA

HE Diocese of Victoria (Hongkong) was founded by the consecration of the Rev. George Smith as Bishop of China and Japan (except the Yangtze Val- loy, where Bishop Boone, of the American Episcopal Church was already at work) and a gift of £20,000 for Endowment of the Bishopric.
Official notification of the founding of the Bishopric was contained in a Government Notification, issued by Major W. Caine, the Colonial Secretary, on January 1, 1850, which, stated:

From this date, therefore, the Colonial Church shall be known as the Cathedral Church of Saint John in the City of Victoria.
