Is your Name COOK?

COMPARED with other classes

of surnames there are not many names denoting occupa- tion, but the number of those holding these is legion. This applies specially to that popular naine Cook,

But, widespread and popular as the name Cook is, its number would have been greater still f those who inherited it had not

ceased to bear it.

Many "Cooks" who wore ushamed of the name altered it to Coke, and others adopted the French form le Queux or Kew.

This prejudice goes back to Tudor umes, for in an old docu- ment there is anecdote

about an a "Mr. John Coke, non to Edward Coke, the lawyer who took much offence at one that ignorantly wrote him Cooke, not Cake.

''Falth,' says 'one that stood by, any man that ever saw him (for he was great fellow) would swear he should rather be written "oo" than "o”ER.

There is abundant evidenco that Sir Edward's name was written Cooke.

BIRDS

are not

so wise

B

IRD owners often bore their friends with proofs of their pets'. intelligence and loyalty.

On the face of it there is plenty to support the idea that birds do a lot of thinking for|

themselves. Stories of rooks

which leave trees before they fall, of seagulls rescuing smal- ler birds in danger of drowning all bear this out.

But actually birds do all these seemingly carefully planned actions without at all knowing why they do them. They do very little thinking, for they have very little to think with.

Their meral equipment is more like an insect's then a man's. They are born almost perfectly equipped to face anything likely to happen to them, as If you had been born know- ing as much as, you do now about your job.

They tie twigs

in knots

But they cannot deal with 'any- thing for which instinct has

not provided them with an appropriaté response. Proof of this is the ease with which you can catch them out.

There is a variety of the African weaver which makes its nest by tying twigs in knots, For years people thought that the young birds were educated to do this by their parents and were very intelligent in- deed.

Until a weaver's egg was artificial- ly incubated, and the young bird hatched out without ever seeing one of his own kind. But when it grew up it instinctively started tying the complicated knots.

Explanation of some of their sup- posed feats of Intelligence is their marvellous sensory powers, Rooks leave trees which are going to col- lapse

because they can hear the trees cracking long before men can.

Savage tribes have always guarded their camps with geese which heard the enemy approaching long before dogo.

Birds have uncanny powers of sight. Swifts travelling at 80 m.p.h. can catch Insects the size of a pin's bead. Their sight is both microscopic. and telescople; they can see things o great way off and things too small for the human eye.

There was a strange contrast between the two men, Domini thought, One eo friendly, engaging — the other so ill at easo.
