sion to the scheme has already been promised by several of the leading schools, including Westminster, Clif- ton, Dulwich, Stowe, Rossall, Brigh- ton, and about a dozen others: and it is hoped that many others, some Fot

which,

llte Malvern, have already

lald down good inrd courts for their boys, will join the Association, whileli will be affilated to the L.T.A, as soon as the scheme gets really going.

Another suggestion, also with the object of giving young players a

1937.

further opportunity of improving their P & O-BRITISH INDIA-APCAR AND

game, is the advocacy

acy of more cover- ed courts being constructed in the London

Queen's area, Except for Club and Dulwich Covered Courts Club, the metropolis is almost entire- ly without courts on which the game can be played regardless of weather and under perfect conditions. These two are, in any case, only available for members of the respective clubs, Nowhere in London can two or four men go and hire a covered court for a couple of hours tennis. It is sug rested that the LTA, might spend some of its surplus funds on con- structing covered courts, but I should doubt whether this Invitation will commend itself to the ruling body. Covered courts are very expensive indeed to build and keep in order. A high charge for the use of them would be necessary if the initial expense was to be justified as a commercial proposition.

DISAPPOINTMENT IN AUSTRALIA

The Australian L.T.A. is meeting with D 3

a great deal of unfavourable criticism in their own country for their decision not to send a team of

coming season. It had been

ly decided that four of their best

les Hartigan, players, including Miss

Misa Coyne, and Miss Wynne, should be sent to compete at Wimbledon next June, and to play matches both in England and on the Continent. Our own L.T.A. had promised £250 to- wards expenses, and passages had • already been booked. Now it seems that the tour is to be cancelled, to the dismay of the pinyers and the as a disgust of all the Australian States except Western Australia, which ap- pears to have a controlling interest in Association. the policy of the national Asso The ostensible reason is that, "prob- ably," a women's international co- petition will be instituted in 1938, and that Australia does not wish, and could not afford, to send a women's team abroad for two years in succes- sion. This seems to me to be rather like snatching at the shadow and 414 dropping the substance.

made open to all nations, instead of remaining, as instituted, an annual. match between England and the U.S.A. So this scheme for instituting another competition open to all na- tions has been profected. It may come to pass: but I imagine that most nations will come, if they have not already done so, to the conclusion that there are quite enough competitions already.

The Australian girls did extremely well on their last four, and would be very welcome again. It is much to be hoped that wiser counsels will prevail in the governing body of Australia, and that the wishes of the majority of the States will be respect- ed. We have seen and admired the so a play of the Australian men for years

past: surely It is time that they

gave their girls a chance of distinguishing themselves as well, and at any rate gaining the experience of meeting new players which must necessarily develop and improve their own game.
