HIGHWAY SEVERED BY REBEL ATTACK

New Capital Distressed By Insurgents' Successes

Santa Cruz de Teneriffe, Feb. 14.

A communique from the Spanish in surgent headquarters, broadcast through the Radio Club here, claims the rebels now occupy territory effectually severing the Madrid-Valen cia main highway for a distance of seven miles. They are strongly defending the occupied section

VALENCIA HEAVILY SHELLED

Valencia, Feb. 14.

This city was heavily bombarded from the sea at 10 p.m. to-night. The shelling continued for five minutes. The damage has not yet been disclosed.

Travellers arriving from Madrid have caused considerable disquiet in Government circles by reporting | that the corridor connecting Valencia with Madrid, long| held by the Loyalists against repeated rebel assaults, has been narrowed to about 25 miles. The insurgents are pressing strongly on the new Government positions, especially to the westward.

Latest reports here, however, indicate that the Government forces are still fighting stubbornly in a determined effort to prevent the closing of the corridor and the starvation of the old capital..

SENTIMENTAL

REASONS

Less than twelve months ago £12,- 000 was offered for the luxury yacht Shehoadoah III, owned by Mr. G. Fahnestock, American multi-million- aire. The offer was refused.

Early this morning a dozen Chinese coolles were ferried out to the ship, anchored behind Stonecutters Island, to commence her destruction.

The Shenandoah III, undoubtedly the most beautiful and luxurious pleasure yacht under sail, has been abandoned to Hongkong shipbreakers. Rather than see her fall into "un- kind" hands, Mr. Fahnestock decided to have his 958 tou yacht broken up. The vessel was sold last week to the Yoe Koon-al Mining Company, of Kwangal, the purchase price being only a few hundred dollars.

Tho salo stipulates that the Shenondoah III must be broken up, and that the work must be done'iii». mediately in Hongkong.

Chancellor, before 1,500 of full independence to the is-

representatives of the Fatherland Front.

Declaring he was Austria's "der fuehrer" as Adolf Hitler was Germany's, Dr. Schuschnigg asserted that he would decide the country's future. With regard to the restoration of Prince Otto to the throne of the Hapsburgs, he said it was necessary to make Austria's attitude absolutely clear.

The country, declared the new dictator, must keep her respect for his historic traditions, but the question must be decided exclusively by the people of Austria, according to the constitution. There would be no experiment; and monarchical propaganda must be kept strictly within the limits and frontiers of present-day Austria, he warned.
