Last week work was begun on the Arst Mormon church to be erested in London. The Moslema and the Buddhists are already established.

While I was learning these facts from Mr. A. R. Dard, the Iman of the London Mosque, a alim pleasant-faced girl dressed in a blue milk frock came walking across the grass-such a girl as you might see in any street of ane of London's quieter suburbs.

beliefs is the gentle faith of the Buddhistя,

Ceylon is nowadays the headquarters of the purest form of Buddhism, and from there has come the Maha Bodi Mission to spread Buddhism in Eng- land.

BUDDHISM is a faith whose nature

-Its missionaries claim-ought to make a special appeal to the critical rational British mind. For Buddhiam, stripped of corruptions, makes demand on blind faith.

no

The Maha Bodi Mission has en- trenched itself near Chalk Farm. In the north-west of London, Laat Sundky J sat amongst a group of British Buckl hista facing an alcove hung with orange-coloured diperles, in which

-upon an altar--was enthroned statue of the Buddihn (teacher. not god).

n

A transparent vell hung down before the altar, and before the vell burned incense which filed the whele rooil, Everyoite rose and chanted, with an effect that was peace-making and hyp- solle, n formula containing the Budd- hist precepts which correspund to the Christian Commandments,

Prospective converts, or idle visitors (the services are open to the publie) asked questions. One wanted to know if the Buddhist precept not to take any form of lite applied to germs also. Another wanted to know the best way - to substitute the Buddhist form of

meditation for Christian prayer

So far the Maha Bodi Mission has made 136 converts in Britain. In one respect it unique amongst the re- igious bodles that I know of: nt its meetings there is no collection.

DAB It- presents a severer falth, but it. too, believes itself to be the custodian of the truth. He is in charge of Lon- don Gaudiya Missinu whitch has come to England from Bengal to teach to the Christian English the tenets of the Hindus.

short time naw, London has its first Hindu Temple

Monastery, British and

disciples Wil be accepted.

TR. BAMBIDANANDA

When, in

To become a Hindu disciple is no simple choice, however. All material

spirituni Joys (which Dr. Das saya in« finitely compensate for this sacrifice) are sought through ascetio practices which call for much endurance and self-control.

Persons, who are too earthbound actually to enter a monastery may be come family disciples and continue to enjoy some of the pleasures of tho firsti.

Their progress towards completa spirituality will be slower, however, and if they allow their desires to fasten too firmly on some material aspect of He they will find that in- stead of escaping at death into a per- feet spiritual state they will be born ngain in some relation to the object of their affections,

For instance, the fox-hunting squire might find himself next time a fox, ahound, or a horse, according to which aspect of the hunt attracted him most strongly.

CHRISTIANITY is not quite unre- "'presented in these new missiona to Britain. With headquarters at Gordon Square, there is the Church of Latter Day Baints, familiarly known as Mormonism.

Mormonism. famous (or notorious) because its early leaders practised polygamy, has abandoned that practice Aince 1800, and ita claim to uniqueness now lies in the belief that it alone han been favoured by additional revela- tions from God and that all human beings must eventually find salvation within its, boundaries.

Alive or dead. all can be saved de. clare the Mormons.

Because they believe this they have n series of Temples set aport, for private rites whose sale object is the reclaim- ing of people who have died outside the Jaith.

Devout Mormans employ poopis to search for the names of their ancestora who are then submitted to baptism in the person of a deputy (baptism is by total immersion) so that none of tho family may be missing when the Last Trump blows.

Last week the bullding of the first Mormon church in London was begun. It is to stand in Clissold-rond; Bioke Newington, Altogether there are 7 Mormon centres in the British Islea. The faithful number 7,000 and

Pick up the R. foot and replace it on the ball of the foot, counting AND. Transfer the weight on to the whole of the L. foot, counting One. Pause for the counts 2, 3. and 4. Now repeat. DIDDLE THE CUSTOMS

A DRIVE to stop petty smug-

gling, estimated to cost England half a million sterling in lost revenue every year, is beginning at all British ports.

The first step is the changing of the time-honoured "Have you

to anything to declare?" the comprehensive "Have you any- thing purchased or aequired abroad?"

This phrase knocks the bot- tom out of the old excuse, "T didn't know I had to declare that,"

Many people imagine that they have the right to bring back half a pint of perfume or spirits and half a pound of tobacco. They are mistaken.

British Customs officials allow you, as a favour, to bring these quantities in duty free on condition that they are declared,

Remember that if your tobacco is in the form of cigars the weight of the box may be counted in the half-pound, and if the total weight exceeds the limit you will have to pay full duty,

This will be several times the value and price of the cigars.

Penalties

The most casy-going Customs ofcials are the Belgions at Ostend; maybe because it is not-worth while smuggling anything into, Belgium, where all dutiable goods are cheaper than here.
