made up with oak and ask. These hospitable

logs are hard woods from the native bush. Perhaps, they burn the better for that. Dark at six, with, wind and rain, not an evening yet but that a gleaming, crackling fireside has been welcome. How familiar the plaints heard about the weather's vagaries.

The same hopeful morning tap on the glass on the way out to either business or pleasure, aimilar glauces, almost in reproof, at ani overcast sky.

The season is Southern England's equivalent of early March, though I fancy were to see as much evidence of growing grass and flowering shrubs in place of our several recent Aprils, we would be more content than some of the folk Here.

Compensation

The dish of yellow primroses is a month sooner, a reminder that for a summer missed one has been compensated by Д couple of

springs in a short year's round.

Purple aubrietla in the garden rockeries, a rippling flight of an cestatic blackbird, and it's Sussex again. But all hedge-row boun- daries to the fields are missing. In fact, too clean a aweep has been made of the original wild vegeta- tlon and the heavier timber, by settlors anxious to establish over- increasing flows of butter-fat.

nothing more sheltering against wind as searching as most we dis- like so than narrow post and strands of barbed wire. Caitle na tender-skinned as Jerseys hunch their backs for want of a wall, horses turn their backsides to the morning's raw greeting: they lay back their cure,

Yet there's no mistaking the caster yielding nature of the soil. Cattle that have had to take pot- luck on the hillsides throughout the winter already have a bloom on their coats.

Some Complaints

A farm without wintering sheds must be an economical one, and most are without them here. Ewes dropping their lambs just where they fancy, with the aid neither ef shepherd nor lambing-fold, look "easy money" just for the grazing, tailing and shearing. Actually things seldom seem na kindly to the farming man the world over. In this case he soon brings into his grouses and growls the lament about taxation and the costly smear of superphosphate.

Mortgages are another banc, the fellow or institution with capital to lend having had a hand in the ac- quisition of most of the land and livestock this country thrives on.

With penurious men anxious to make a beginning the terms asked were all too often readily, almost greedily, agreed to.

'The sanguine are the easier pres. and a young settlement breathes an optimism not'always warranted. That sounds à trifle carping in the

face of present prospects. The like- Whood of a million more · lambs available for overseas than Inst year, or almost any other recently, is an unearned increment.

Everywhere the paddocks are crowded with the fleecy progeny of 10,000,000 owes, averaging out in all probablity this exceptional season at 1 lambs per ewe.

Soon after the turn of the year, picking at richly clovered pastures that, ng the summer advances, ex- pand their nourishment, these pas- toral products come on to our food markets just when our own dull, dark days are at their zero.

A country with a climate and a season as complementary to our own, as this onė enjoys must prove our own's most natural counter- part. Even the human complexions are not so wizened with a hot, direct sun as marks the tropical inhabitant.

Growing, Roads

Wet winds from the surrounding sea search into every corner of these lalands as they do at home. There are mountains more tower- ing than Wales' or the lonesome Grampians, yet not unlike them. snow-capped the year round, they serve as the people's national play- ground, besleged up to their tree- Ino by sheep and the bardy Angus, cattle. Every new nere is a con- quest.

The roads are in the making. though so easily constructed and so lightly used that mileage in this regard, brought into service almost
