the second time this season, the Royal Ulster Rifles yesterday snatched victory out of South China's grasp just when it appeared the champions were going to romp away with two league points. Highly dramatic and colourful was this encounter at Caroline Hill which kept a huge crowd roaring and cheering with excitement. Fifteen minutes from the end Rifles were two goals in arrears. Then they quick- ly adopted the initiative, made lightning raids on the Chinese citadel and piled on a couple of goals before the championa knew what had happened.

Had the game lasted another five minutes I am sure the soldiers would have won.

The two blg features of the match were Lee Wai-tong's per feet hat-strick and Irwin's three

(to corners

take which he crossed over from the right wing to the left), which were so accurately placed that all three were converted into goals.

There were periods when it seem- ed

longue leaders would be the overwhelmed. South China obtain- ed a strong grip on the game and with three goals coming from the foot of LeC Wai-tong at regular intervals, there appeared to be small chance of the soldiers saving a point. But not even the masterful Lee Tin-sang, the enterprising Kang-pak or the confident Pau Ka- ping could legislate against Irwin's remarkable corner kicks. Each time the ball, with a terrifying swerve, landed within a foot of the cross bur. The first time it was scrambler away only to be shot back from five yards range. The Inst two occasions, bobbing heads went up to meet the ball, and into the net it went.

South China played their brand of football. Neat and accurate in their passes and keeping the bak moving with precision. They were co-ordinated than The soldiers, but I thought. Promising to make the boldest bid for Interport honours since 1933, Shanghai Football Associa- tion on Saturday last selected a team of eleven players, who, it is claimed, constitute the finest representative side at the dis posal of the selectors.

The team has several distinctive features. It is all-foreign, none of

Shanghai, Feb. 8. No little surprise was created in Shanghai football circles on: Saturday when it was announced that Stanley Gash, after play- ing in all of the Interport trials and having been named as cap- tain of the Shanghai team to visit Hongkong, would not be playing in the Interport game.
