EXPERIMENTS

PREPARE ten groups of twelve letters each, and write each group

on a separate piece of paper.

Show each group to a friend, allowing him to gaze at them for ten seconds each time. Then, in each case, allow twenty seconds to elapse, and ask him to write down, as correctly as he can, each Count the number of mistakes he has made, group of twelve letters.

Now repeat the whole performance with a further lot of ten groups of twelve letters each. But this time do not let him see the groups. Read them to him, taking ten seconds in each case. Again count his mistakes. The result will show whether he remembers more easily things seen or things heard.

READ aloud a passage from a book or newspaper. Get a friend to alipa plece of white paper or cardboard over the passage and note how many words you can read after your view has been cut off. Count the total number of letters thus seen before they were pronounced.

Repeat the experiment several times and calculate the average, number. This number of letter spaces between the ward fixated and the word being spoken is called the "eyr-voice span."

As the quality of reading improves, this eye-voice span lengthens, With young children it may be, as small as five letters, but good readers have eye-voice spans of more than eighteen. The average has an eye-volce span of about fourteen.
