For the GRAMOPHONE

by SPIKE HUGHES

MUST admit that I had not heard the rumour, nor should I lave balieved it if I had, for the days of sensational moves and de- velopments in the gramophone in- dustry are past.

But it remains that the Crystalate people wrote to me last week naking me to tell all and sundry that Gracie Fields' contract to record for Rex records will last "for a consklerable time."

Not only should this news please Crvalaiate and Gracie Fields. But everybody who wants to buy the best shillingsworth of shellac, the Industry спя Олег.

Just how much entertainment n ̈ shilling will buy these days the new mid-month Rex liat will show you.

On one record you can get not only Oracle Fields, but Sandy Powell, Lorry Adler, Jay Wilbur, Reginald Dixon, Joe Petersen, Prime Scala and Charlie Kunz as well.

Rex 8905 is called "Oracle's and Sandy's Party," in which the other artists are, enferlained-the whole lot nt ljd. a head, so far as the listener is concerned. It's the cheapest all-star party I ever heard of, anyway.

Enchanting Music

ATE one night last week I tuned in to Stuttgart. An orchestra was playing a ballet sulto by Handel.

Through these hundreds of miles of darkness heard. un unmistakable sound coming from that orchestra: Léon Goossens obce, as clearly per sonal and characteristic as though it were his apenking voice.

What I heard transpired to be a re- cording of Sir Thomas Descham's first concert in Berlin with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which had been

broadcast earlier in the evening. Evidently, from the applause that followed the performance,

Bir Beecham" and his boys shook 'em up in Berlin. Poor Germany! Nobody ever goes there any more, and it has to rely on its own incredibly dull musleal life for what excitement it can get these days. No wonder the London Philharmonic gave them a thrill,

This orchestra's latest recording in the Columbia list should prove one of the most popular orchestral recordings of the year, for It is of Bizet's suite, 'L'Arleslenne." Or, rather, of the first part of the sulte, the prelude, the lovely adagletto and the minuet, (LXB41-2.)

This is enchanting music by a com- poser who, though you might not think it wrote a great deal besides that masterplece, "Carmen.”

Wagner & Hitler,

SUPPOSE comebody still goes to the Wagner festival at Bayreuth every year, though what can be the attraction I have idea.

Of some interest to Incurable Wagnerites ought to be recordings of this year's Bayreuth festival and for that reason I dmw attention to the Decca excerpts from "Lohengrin " "Walküre" and "Siegfried."

Semi-circular, commanding an un- Interrupted view of a road gang working noislly, it is far more sump- tuous than any of the much-photo- graphed movie boudoirs of Holly- wood.

Even Louls. B. Mayer's marble halls at Metro are no more lavish.

AGED 43

In the office, a chip shot from his nearest secretary and a half-mashie from the door, sits Alexander Korda, who, at the age of 43, has solemnly assured me that he will never direct a "film again in his life,

I cannot help thinking of the irony of a system that forces Bruno Walter to leave Germany, because he is a Jew, to make some months ago the finest

"Walküre" recording of our time.

Sacred to Kreisler

NOW that Yehudi Menuhin has retired for two years, we have only Gramophone records to remember him by.

His recorded output in the past hins been prolife and of a high standard, but no sooner doça he leave the cott- ecrt platform than a most untypical and trivial collection of records is Issued.

Following his records of "Tam- bourin Chinols" and "Liebesfreud," Yehudi Menuhin has now recorded the sacrosanct "Caprico Viennois" (H.M.V, DA 1506), and thus steps in where Szigeti, Heifetz, Thibaud and Elman would fear to trend.

However well anybody plays it. It will never sound no sweet or authentle as when Kreiåler playa it.

WITH SHERRIFF.

One of the Alms Korda hopes to make this year will be an original atory of Noel Coward, to be written in film form by Coward nnd-Sherriff. Based on the life of Charles II., it will be produced by the versatlie Noel, and he will play the King.

"We have not signed any con- tracts yet, Korda remarked.

"Both Coward and Sherriff are very keen on the idea, I am sure it will be possible to make the picture, probably in the spring."
