BUSINESS RECOVERY

SIR EDWARD BEATTY AND

PROSPECTS FON 1937 -

The pronouncements of Sir Ed- word Beatty, Chairman and Pre- sident of the Canadian Pacific Rall- way, on economic issues are always of interest. In a New Year message to the Company's officers and em- ployees, just received in Hongkong. Sir Edward jays:

"The close of 1030 Justifies the forecast of improved business con- ditions with which the year com menced and it is my hope and be-- lief that the new year of 1937 wlil see us moving forward on the path of recovery. Although International commerce is still retarded by the burden of fears and jealousies, we enter the coming year with clear evidence of more willingness to re- move the unnecessary barriers to recovery than has been shown for miany years past.. Alarms created by of of large stocks primary products and raw materials have been dissipated by increasing realisation that this condition was a temporary one and, that the world still requires and can use n the wenith which it can produce. The stability of our system of society has been enhanced by the firmness with which it has met the stresses of recent times, and confidence in pesce and order which is the very founda- tion of commerce and of progress is steadily being restored.

"The New Year will bring with it new problems requiring both courage and caution. While the volume of business Increnses, there has been but slight, recovery in its profit, and there is continued need for ever- increasing thrift and efficiency. On the whole, we can look back on 1030 as the year which proved that re- covery was possible and can look forward to 1937 with hope that re- covery will be firmly established.
