One Saturday afternoon early in March, the world was shocked to learn that German troops, disregarding treaties, had marched into the Rhineland under Hitler's orders. France was thrown into a turmoil. The Maginot Line was hurriedly manned. For a few days Europe seem- ed back at 1914 again-but the crisis blew over, as did a threatened dispute between Russia and Japan over Mon- golia, and troubles between China and Japan. A few happenings there were dur- ing the year that were. absolutely good, signs that men can arrange their affairs reasonably if they will.

There was the negotiation of a treaty between Great Britain and Egypt-a treaty which gave both sides what they wanted, with the lasting advantage of a staunch friend and ally in addition. There was the peaceful settle- ment of Turkey's claim to re-. fortify the Dardanelles, a claim that was referred to the League of Nations and set- tled amicably with their help. There was the notable im- provement in employment in Britain, and the admit- ted success of the new Blum Government in France.
