POLITEST GUNMEN IN AMERICA
Even Kept The Lift Working
New York, Dec. 15.
FOUR gunmen are still at large to-day who have reached a high watermark in crime for aftability and dar- ing.
While they spent six hours rob- bing jewellers on the ground floor of a Washington buliding. they rag the lift, and kept the furnace going for 30 families living on the other foors..
Then they made off with lost valu- ed at £1,000.
BOUND MEN
They frat held up the liftman, Joseph McGrath, when he arrived at 7 a.m. yesterday. One put on his uniform and delivered 11 faultless pervice to residents.
Meanwhile, in the basement of the building, the superlatendent and furnace-man lay bound hand and foot with the liftman. When they complained that they had no breakfast, the gunman ou guard replied, "In good, and if the boys are not finialed by noon, we will rive you something to cat,"
He lit cigarettes for them, and read extracts from the newspapers,
HOLE CUT IN FLOOR
The other two gangsters had enter- ed an unoccupied flat over the shop, cut a large hole through the door, and climbed through.
By noon rens, watches, and rings were in the hands of the robbers, and they quietly left the building.
Telling his story of the hold-up, McGrath said, "I saw a guy hanging around the ball. The next thing I knew was that he was pointing a gun ut me saying 'keep quiet.'
Superintendent Hollman continued the story: "1 was awakened by some- one raying, there is n lady to see the empty flat. She means business. So I upened the door. There was a gun right in my face."
