EPIC

CO-OP.: A NOVEL OF LIVING

H

TOGETHER

By Upton Binclair

(Werner Laurie, 78.6d.)

ERE is a worthy successor |to Oll, The Jungle and other books about things that matter in this world.

Upton Sinclair has made more hairs stand end than any thriller writer, and more brains get to work prob- lems of social conditions than any text- book, because he not only gives the facts but presents them vividly in terms of men and women, not figures in a row or arguments ambling along side by alde.

In short, he appeals to the con- telence as well as the emotions.

In California in 1933 there were one hundred and seven-five self-help co- operative societies and seventy-five in the rest of the United States. This a He story of one of them, based on first-. hand knowledge and tuspired by faith in their efforts to "End Poverty in California."

They are not co-operative societies as we know them in this country. They nre bands of men and women who are Bred of lving in discarded concrete rewer pipes, watching food rot in the ground because it does not pay" to gather it, houses tumble down because tire is no money to pay for necessary repairs and skill and knowledge and usefulness refused, an outlet because they are unemployed.

In effect they have returned to a system of barter, exchanging their. Inbuir directly for a proportion of the fruits of their labour and sharing i equitably anɑngst themarivea, without the exchange of money.

You need something done, but you can't afford to pay for it. These e-operators will do it, if you will give turn something they need teliher good for immediate consumption or tasis for other jobs) which you can't rell because your neighbours or cus- tonera ure similarly turd up.

It is not always simple in compl cated societies sich as ours.

able bargain—it can'be made to work, Of course, there is opposition. You have to pick your way betwren vested interests and established traders, Thero is likely to be internal disserulon between those who want to go fast and those who want to go slow, those who aro adventurous and those who are Limid.

Upton Sinclair paints no Utopia and advocates no panácea for all economic ills in this book. In fact, he ends on a questioning and töpleni note. Gov. ernment schemes are cutting across the work of the co-operatives and drly- ing their members back on to idlences and rellet. His hero goes to the White House and tells his story to the President

"Quite a decision for the President of the United States to make.

"Should he let the unemployed get hold of the land and the tools and act

to work to build themselves a new world, with now freedom and inde- pendence for all workers? Should he permit them to make a demonstration of the fact that they could do such a job and that they wonted to?

"It was very, very dangerous in the eyes of everyone who believed in the profit system and thought I could be patched and kept going... What was Franklin D. Roosevelt doing to answer?"

Whether or not you think these co-operatives can build a new and beller economic system, this book does give the lle to those who think there is nothing to pe done but despair. We have got into mess, and we can get out of it if we are really determined. One way or'another, it has got to be donc.
