It would amaze him, I think, to see some of the work that is constantly being done behind the scenes in an attempt to rid golf courses of pests and plants that wage war on turf, and to provide perfect greens and fairways în moat unfavourable circumstances.
High up on the moors at Bingley, in Yorkshire, is the station of the Board of Greenkeeping Research, an institution maintained by the British golf unions for the scientifle Investigation of greenkeeping problems.
There are some twenty neres of land, offices, and laboratories, and experiments are carried out and mysterious diseases investigated for clubs in all parts of the world.
There is a staff of twenty, headed by Mr. R. B. Dawson, the director of research, Mr. R. B. Ferro, his chief assistant, and Including Ave scientists, one of whom is a woman, Miss Lovi- hand.

THESE FIGURES TELL HAMMOND'S
AUSTRALIAN STORY
London, Nov. 21.
B
Far their moderate successes in Australia on this tour to date M.C.C. are chiefly indebted to Hammond, who has scored personal triumph in every match in which he has played. His present conspicuous success, however, is only one chapter of the story of his cricket in Australia which is recorded in the figures 28 given below by E. L. Roberts. These figures reflect
Ham. mond's wonderful consistency and versatility. They cover all irst-class matches in Australia from 1928 to November 19, 1936.

Another important side of the station's work is the training of future golf secretaries. Every year numerous aspirants to this type ot Job go to Bingley for training in the laying-out and upkeep of courses.
