WINTER HANDS
--and their

winter nose
ED - noses and red hands may be a joke to some people
in their appearance. If you follow a few simple rules you needn't be bothered by them.
Hands are the easlest to look after. In general, avoid washing them in water that is very hard or very cold. There are two distinct types of hands which are prone to redness,
*.
First there are the hands which are thick- skinned and go white and dead in cold weather. Main trouble with these is bad circulation. Mas- sage helps, but lakes a long time. Best treat- ment is to wash them in water as hot as you can stand it. Brush them with a fairly hard brush, and every time you wash them dry them thoroughly and rub a good greasy cream well into them. Take particular care of the knuckles and joints of your fingers; they are liable to look connue and ugly.
If your hands are Delicate
THE
THE second type of red hands is more difficult to deal with. These are the delicate hands, with prominent veins; cold makes them go blue and swell, and heat makes them sweat. Cold hurts them; chil- blains appear the first fronty day, generally on the fingers and knuckles,
If your hands are like this wash them as little as possible, and always use very soft sonp, To harien them rub them with camphorated alcohol; if they're very bad rub them with camphorated oil every evening.
Never hold them near a fire; at intervals during the day dust them over with tale powder.
R
You'll do them the most good by keeping your whole body warm and circulation flowing; take all the exercise you can.
When you're buying gloves, choose them on the loose side; they're fatal to hands if they're too tight.
Once you've got chilblains, the best thing you can do for them is to rub them gently with equal parts of soda and glycerine, Avoid sudden heat and Cold
ED noses need more care. Dry heat
central heating in your house, keep
a bowl of water near it. Avoid sudden changes af Temperature by protecting your skin with cold cream.
Massage is good for noses which are inclined to be fleshy, but its first effect is to make the nose
well for half an hour or so.
Red noses may be difficult to cure com- pletely, but it is easy enough to conceal them. Before you make up you should rub a brown cream lightly and carefully over your whole face, giving the effect of slight sunburn.
Pale powder shows up a red nose instead of hiding it,-and-loo dark powder makes it stand. oul. So be careful to choose exactly the right shade of powder for your poor nose
and put it on evenly and smoothly.

Xmas puddings
should be
be made NOW
CHRISTMAS is only a fortnight away.
Those who do not already possess R Christmas pudding should make some at
once.
Those who have wisely kept one from last year should start making next year's puddings. Maturtiy is most important.
You can no more get away from this piece of advice than you can get away from my trusted recipe, which I am just going to trot out once more.
Since its lost appearance I have had affec- tionate letters about it, from both home and abroad. It has apparently achieved the re- markable feat of being a pillar of Empire with out being solid. Here I be
1th, shredded beef suet; Nib. Demerara sugar; b. currants: 116. raisins; 1lb. sultanas; 11b. mired candied peel (with more orange and alisonds; one teaspoonful of salt; one teaspoon- lemon than citron); 21. breailerumba; lb. Jut of mixed splee; three cant; one pill of brandy.
says the HOME PAGE COOK
Stone and halve the raisins, chop the peel, and blanch and chop the almonds.
Hold back- the eggs and the brandy, but put everything else in the recipe into a basin and stir with a wooden spoon until thoroughly mix- est. Beat the eggs before adding them, with the brandy, to the mixture. Stir well again.
*
Level the mixture over, cover the basin with a cloth, and stand It aside for 12 hours in a cool_place.
Give another good stir before dividing the mixture and packing it firmly into buttered pudding basins. Boll for 12 hours. The pud- dings will need another three hours' bolling immediately before appearing
table.
There is no flour in these puddings. Please do not allow any water to get into them while they are being boiled. If water once gets in, It simply does not matter what else is in the pudding.
When a baby has reached 15lbs it is usual to giva. some additional food to all muik. Start with veal bone and vegetable broth one teaspoonful to begin with at the mid-day feed- any vegetables except onions can be Used. Then after "another month allow a small quantity of cereal food such as barley water instead of water with milk feed.
At six months you may begin cereal jellies, pulled bread, and spinach and prune purces. Then, watching the weight very carefully, continue to add such things as coddled egg, vegetable purees, and gravy, and milk puddings and baked apple.
Always start row things in the tiniest quantities-my, one teaspoon- ful-and take a long time to increase them.
