VACUUM CLEANER FOR HEART ATTACK
"Dramatic" Recovery Of Cases
HOT AIR PUMPED INTO LUNGS
By A Naval Correspondeat
The use of an electric vacuum eleaner to treat a certain type of failure of the heart is described In the current issue of The Lancet.
In certain patients a weak heart falls to maintain an adequate circula- tion through the lungs, and fluid accumulates there. If the air pres- sure within the lungs con be in- creased, it is found that blood al- ready present in the chest is forced onwards towards the heart, while the increased pressure prevents the delivery of excess of blood into the lungs.
The machine, which is designed to produce increased pressure, con- sists of a "blower," for which pur- pose an electric vacuum cleaner has been used.
An adjustable resistance is used to reduce the pressure, and F hot- water bottle is placed in the com- partment for the dust-bag so as to warm the air.
R
If household machine is used it ls run first to get rid of nil dust, and then the machine adjusted to de- liver air at increased pressure into a mask which 15 fixed over the patient's face.
It is stated that the machine hos been used in over twenty cases, und In some of them the recovery from the attack of heart-failure is report- ed as "dramatle." --"
