Handle Valuables
ANY bank customers make use of their bank's strong rooms to safe- guard valuables.
Gold plate, jewels, deads, bonds, and family heirlooms remain in the vaults for years. The banks must hold valuables worth hundreds of millions of pounds.
In taking charge of a box or partel a banker aska no question about its contents. A seated packet to him is n sealed packet and nothing more. That all that he will acknowledge having received. He will not give a receipt for, say, a diamond necklace,
As a further safeguard every páreel must be sealed in a distinguishable manner by the person depositing I
Owners don't forget
There is a widespread idea that banks have come into treat fortunes by taking possession of the treasures that have been deposited with them for safe keeping, and then forgotten by their owners.
foxes lle in banks for many years without being claimed, but their whereabouts are nearly alwayn known to their owners, it is no uncommon thing for a box to
be claimed after a lapse of 60 or 70 years.
Articles of value left at the bank by a rain during his lifetime will in all probability he claimed by the execu» tors after the depositor's death.
has been suggested that banks should údvertine when boxes have been unclntined for a number of years, but it is generally felt that this would be indivisable and would constitute a breach of confidence.
The public to-day have the greatest faith in the absolute
secrecy which the banks muintain, and they know that their banking transactions will never be re- vealed.
It happens occasionally that netian bas to be taken, Some time ago a box deposited with a bank began to emit objectionable fumes, All efforts to get in touch with the owner falled, and the box was therefore broken open. It was found to contain a mass of chemicals.
Later it transpired flint the owner was in prison, but
the averet of the chemicals was never known,
A few years ago it was revealed
during the poller court proceedings
that a draft trafficker had discover-
ed a secure hiding place for his cocaine. He made it up into neat ittle packets and deposited them with his bank in Edgware Road.
Sentimental value
Many of the unclaimed boxes contain papers of sent!- doubilean mental interest only, such as personal letters. Others, no doubi, ure empty, į and have been left at the bank owing] to the owner's Intention of redeposit- ing articles in them.

Piano makes hands
P
Do you know, what 'makes a graceful hand?
Flexibility.
Your hands may be large, hunt-fingered, and wide, but if they have flexibility The banks, of course, would be: only too glad to get rid of all these they can be graceful.
They must not be waved about, but used with old bazes. They occupy valuable precision and ease in one smoothly flowing line, from space, and as no charge in made for the wrist, from the elbow, or from the shoulder. their custody they are a financial loss
to the banker holding them,

AUTOGRAPH CHAMPIONS
T
IWO claimants to the title of "King of Autograph-hunters" have be- tween them spent nearly 60 years obtaining the signatures of the world's most famous men.
They are the two Reginalds, Mr. Reginald Hunt, Yorkshire squire of 3,000 acres, and Mr. Reginald Bray, London business man.
While Mr. Hunt has been travelling 10,000 miles during the past 20 years making his collecilon, Mr. Bruy has sat in his Forest 10 home writing 23,000 letters. His enormous collection has been made entirely through the pust.
Special Postage Rate
He sends to many letters that the postal authorities receive his letters at a sperini halfperny rate. During the whole 37 years he has been making the collection, postage, printing, and stationery have cost him only about £130. He has never bought a signature.
Bath men have a store of clever ruses by which to obtain the signatures of the autograph-shy-that is. practically everybody whose signature is worth getting.
Mr. Dray tried many times to get the signature of Pope Plus X, but was unsuccessful until he hit on the idea of writing in Latin, when the siganture was im- mediately forthcoming.
Mr. Hunt obtained Mr. de Valera's nutograph by a somewhat unilor ritse. After having bad a number of applications refused he wrote from an accommodation address, signing himself "Patrick O'Flanagan," a good old Irish name which the President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State, was unable to withstand,.
Jacob Epstein, famous sculptor, is another celebrity whose signature caused Mr. Hunt much trouble. After repeated requests he met Epstein and had the sculptor. on the point of signing.
He made the mistake, however, of mentioning that his collection of autographs totailed 2,000. Epstein would not be the 2,001st, he declared, and would not sigh. But Mr. Hunt got his signature in the end.
